We are excited to announce our inaugural cohort of New York Community Trust Snug Harbor Van Lier Fellows in Visual Arts, Brianna Caraballo and Vasudev Vashisht! 🎉

The New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowships is a New York-based program that supports early-career artists in theater, music, and visual arts to advance their careers through financial stipends, mentorship, and professional development. The fellowship aims to help talented artists establish themselves in the professional arts community.

Brianna and Vasudev will begin their year-long fellowship by working in their studios, gaining access to transformative resources of professional development support, and will culminate their time at Snug Harbor with a solo exhibition which will launch next summer!

Stay tuned for upcoming artist spotlight posts that share more about Vasudev and Brianna’s artistry.

Did you mark your calendars for the upcoming African Film Festival screening and performance with Craig Harris on 7/16?!

We're screening Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat in partnership with the African Film Festival and Universal Temple of the Arts through our Jazz Is Staten Island series. Directed by Johan Grimonprez and released in 2024, the film was the 2025 Oscar® nominee for Best Documentary Feature.

Join us on 7/11 for the opening celebration of Serpentine Sibyls, the new floating sculptural installation by Daniel Rothbart. As part of the opening festivities, Jeffrey Lependorf, composer and visual artist, will perform an improvised musical meditation.

Lependorf is a master player of the shakuhachi (traditional Japanese bamboo flute) and will play in conversation with the floating sculptures, blending traditional Zen meditation and avant-garde musical techniques.🎶

📣SAVE THE DATE:📣 Serpentine Sibyls – A Floating Sculptural Installation by Daniel Rothbart will be on view on 07/11!

The installation takes its title from the Sibyls—female prophetesses and oracles consulted in times of crisis. In an era marked by floods, heat waves, and wildfires, their presence resonates anew, reflecting the growing precarity of human life amid climate change and environmental loss. Rothbart’s sculptures evoke aquatic organisms and botanical forms from a distant past, conjuring life forms that feel at once primordial and speculative, alien yet strangely familiar. Rooted in deep history while gesturing toward an uncertain future, the works occupy a threshold between memory and prophecy. Situated within Snug Harbor’s historic landscape—a former refuge for sailors—the installation becomes a space for contemplation on where humanity has been and where it may be headed.

Once set afloat, Rothbart’s sculptures are animated by wind and water. Through a visual language of structure, light, buoyancy, and motion, they transform perceptions of the surrounding environment.

Staten Island jazz is taking center stage in a new Photoville installation! Created by Nataki Alexander-Hewling and the HERShot Girls Collective in partnership with Snug Harbor and Universal Temple of the Arts, the incredible local talent in our community is celebrated in A Great Day, a new dynamic public art display. This installation was created for and featured in the recent Photoville Festival.

Join us for a community conversation at Snug Harbor, part of Speaking of Revolution—a statewide series developed by Humanities New York. This gathering is one of several across New York where neighbors explore how ideas of rupture and renewal continue to shape civic and cultural life. Each event begins with a short reading or image, chosen locally, to spark open, reflective dialogue. There’s no panel, no lecture, and no pressure to have the right answer—just a chance to listen, share, and think together.

A 360 view of the public sculpture Acacia Unipod: Seed of Rwanda by Dario Mohr!

Acacia UniPod: Seed of Rwanda is a public sculpture from Dario Mohr’s Acacia Forest series, on view on Gazebo Row at Snug Harbor. The work honors the indigenous heritage of Rwanda through a language of unity rather than tribal distinction. While the broader series often references specific cultural lineages, this piece intentionally departs from that framework.

Rwanda’s contemporary identity is shaped by a collective commitment to stand as one people, rejecting tribal designations that were historically weaponized through colonial intervention to divide communities. The acacia tree, a symbol of endurance, regeneration, and ancestral presence across the African continent, is distilled here into a singular form: one pod, one seed, one nation. Rather than inscribing the names of tribes, the sculpture bears a single name, Rwanda affirming unity as an act of cultural sovereignty and healing.

From participatory ritual to immersive sound, tomorrow's events offer two unique ways to engage with art:

🌱Happy Planting Day with is a ceremony and participatory ritual created to transform grief, memory, and ancestral connection into collective acts of renewal. You’ll be invited to take part in the ritual by writing messages to deceased loved ones on handmade seed paper cards. Each card contains embedded African Daisy seeds, symbolizing resilience, beauty, and regeneration. Participants will be guided to reflect, write, and then offer their messages as part of a communal act of remembrance.

🌊Lines in the Water by will be a site-specific spatial composition that merges archival material with present-day data from New York Harbor. In the compositional process, Torge will use historical maritime maps and signals as well as other archival material to influence standard notation and develop graphic notations in a score performed by instrumentalists. Recordings from maritime sites throughout the harbor will be used to influence and dictate the rhythmic, harmonic, and overall structure of the composition. In addition to the recordings, real-time data like wind direction/speed and radio signals from the harbor will be used to determine parameters such as the sonic spatialization while the piece is performed. This anchors the performance to the present moment within the harbor.
