Earth Month makes us think of land art, an art movement that gained prominence in the 1960s. An important work of land art is Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty, completed in 1970. Spiral Jetty forms a 1,500-foot-long, 15-foot-wide counterclockwise coil of basalt rocks, mud, and salt crystals jutting from the shore of Utah’s Great Salt Lake. The work is Utah’s official work of Land Art. Who knew that states had official works of land art? Not us!

To mark Earth Month, we remember the National Park posters created by the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project (FAP) during the Great Depression. The project hired thousands of Americans to create murals, posters, stage sets, and other works of art to combat unemployment among artists. Thirteen national parks issued posters created by the FAP. Original posters are rare and highly valued by collectors; reproductions are widely available.

On this last day of Women’s History Month, we remember one of our favorite exhibitors, photographer Patricia Wilder of Victor, NY, who died in Oct. 2020 after a brief fight with cancer.

Pat’s booth was an oasis of calm on Pollock Road, next to Fiji fraternity. Her beautiful photography—she shot on film—earned her numerous prizes including the Arete Best in Show Award in 2015. Quoting from her obituary: “ Few people ever spotted Pat without a camera and in 1994 she began a long and successful career as a photographer. She shared her particular photographic vision of surfaces and forms as they are found all around us. Sometimes whimsical, sometimes serious, her photography reflected her determination to find, appreciate and share beauty all around her.
We will miss her courage, her kindness, her sense of humor and her Christmas cookies, but we take forward her exhortation to live life to the fullest, to never hold back and always to take time for the important things in life: family, friends, art, poetry and music.”

On this last Friday in Women’s History Month we celebrate Emily Muir (1903-2004)—painter, architect, philanthropist, and the first woman to serve on the Commission on Fine Arts, the federal agency charged with advising the President, Congress, and Washington DC government on matters of design. The seven-member Commission reviews designs proposed for memorials, coins, medals, and new or renovated government buildings, as well as privately owned properties in certain areas of Washington.

Muir primarily worked in oils, but occasionally produced sculpture, and many works in watercolor. She was instrumental in helping the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts location Deer Isle, and designed over 40 homes there.

Riding my bike this Memorial Day weekend wearing my vintage 1992 CPFA t-shirt design, designed by my mom, Anni Matsick, and vintage CPFA ball cap. A great way to enjoy a nice sunny day. #ArtsFestTshirtTuesdays
