Tea Time! - "It's such a happiness when good people get together." -Jane Austen

Tea is usually served in the afternoon, between 3pm and 4pm.

It was also seen as a time for people to flirt and exchange information on romantic pursuits during the Regency Era. This was because both genders could participate in Tea Time together without being seen as scandalous.

Tea Time! - "But indeed I would rather have nothing but tea." -Jane Austen

The main types of tea drawn from Camellia Sinensis are Black, White, Green, Pu’erh, and Oolong. Alongside these teas, there are a variety of herbal teas as well.

While the Regency Era had all 5 types of tea, Green, Oolong, and Black were the most common. Tea was also served according to precedent and social status.

It's Tea Time - for after all, "you can never have too large a party." - Jane Austen

During the Regency Era, tea was served alongside “small finger sandwiches, biscuits (cookies), seedcake, and small cakes” with butter icing.

Speaking of treats, Jane Austen’s favorite food was toasted cheese, made with grated cheese, an egg, butter, and toast.

It’s our March social – a mix of book club, play reading, and discussion with members of the Tempest Actors Ensemble. Join us as we take a look at James Goldman’s 1966 play, The Lion in Winter. Depicting the lives of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine during Christmas 1183. The play premiered on Broadway in 1966 with Robert Preston and Rosemary Harris and was later adapted into a 1968 film with Peter O’Toole and Katharine Harris.

Join ensemble members Jeff Brown, Drew Pirrone Brusse, Hannah Almon Mantego, Beth Resko, Mary Rose Valentine, Mike Waldhier, and Lori Wilson for refreshments, discussion, and reading. Explore themes, inspiration, and how history is portrayed in drama.
