Happy Birthday to Howard “Sandman” Sims, born January 24, 1917. He was an African American tap dancer who originally wanted to be a professional boxer, but after breaking his hand twice, decided he needed a career change and noticed that the audience liked it when he danced in the rosin box before a boxing match, so he took tap shoes and experimented until he found that dancing in a low box filled with sand created a unique and naturally amplified sound, which gave him his nickname. He started gaining popularity during “challenge dancing” where dancers who met on the street threw down and danced against each other. This led to him becoming a regular performer at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, and he became a devoted teacher who’s students included Gregory Hines and Ben Vereen.

Children’s classes begin at age 4 and CPDW's adult classes span a spectrum of ages with no upper limit. Ballroom lessons and other private lessons in a multitude of styles can also be scheduled by appointment.

Performance opportunities include two end-of-semester, theme-based School Performances, the annual Student Choreographers Showcase, the Maypole Dance on Memorial Day in historic Boalsburg, and our yearly appearance on children's day at the Central PA Festival of the Arts. Additionally, the Fraser Street Dancers, CPDW's advanced student company, perform at various venues throughout the year.

CPDW is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization founded in 1969 with the goal to enrich the community through dance classes and performances, bringing dance to groups and individuals who otherwise might never have an exposure to this art form.

CPDW operates on a semester system, offering a 14-week Fall semester beginning after Labor Day, and a 14-week Spring semester, which begins in January. During May and early June, there is a 5-week Intersession, and following the Intersession, CPDW offers a 6-week Summer semester.
