Some people hold a community together without making any noise, and Sandra Del Pilar is one of them 🫶 This year we’re honoring her for what she has been, and continues to be, for Happy Valley: someone who builds bridges between different communities and across generations, always with a smile.

We sat down with her so you can hear her story in her own words.

Hay personas que sostienen una comunidad sin hacer ruido, y Sandra del Pilar es una de ellas. Este año la reconocemos por lo que ha sido y sigue siendo para Happy Valley: alguien que tiende puentes entre comunidades distintas y entre generaciones, y que lo hace siempre con una sonrisa.

Last night’s Vejigante mask workshop filled the room at 3 Dots Downtown . Brushes in hand, everyone painted their own mask, whether clay, cardboard, walnut or coconut shell, or papier-mâché, and many boricuas were there to share the tradition. Toco Toco stopped by too, and of course we took photos with him! Watch the recap 🎭

Thank you to Lyvia E. Valentín for guiding us, and to 3Dots Downtown for hosting. We loved seeing so many families and neighbors leave with a piece of Puerto Rico in their hands 🇵🇷 And remember, Toco Toco is on display at the Hispanic Heritage Art Exhibit in 3Dots all month long.

El taller de máscaras de vejigante de anoche llenó el espacio de 3Dots. Con pincel en mano, cada persona pintó su propia máscara, ya fuera de barro, cartón, coco o papel maché, y hubo muchos boricuas compartiendo la tradición. Toco Toco también nos visitó, ¡y nos tomamos fotos con él! Miren el resumen 🎭

Calling all kids! 🎭

Join us this Sunday at 2:30 PM at 3 Dots Downtown for a Vejigante Mask Painting Workshop with Lyvia E. Valentín, and meet Toco Toco, who’s stopping by for the very first time. Bomba y plena will be playing while you paint, and there’s a photo booth for souvenir pictures with Toco Toco. Children get their own coloring pages, and no experience is needed. This Tuesday, October 6, 5:45 to 7:30 p.m., at the Flex Theater (134 HUB), please join the Latino Caucus, the Paul Robeson Cultural Center, the Center for Social Change and Belonging, Penn State’s Sigma Lambda Gamma Chapter, and LAGRASA for coffee, sweet treats, and an engaging conversation about building unity across difference. At this Cafe con Leche, we will explore how to connect across the differences between and within our communities while honoring the experiences and perspectives that make every individual and group unique.
