We’d like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family of “Ms Sharon”- Sharon Avant, who passed yesterday.
She’s more than just a community figure for us. For our after school program and our business as a skating rink, she is a huge piece of the puzzle pieces that helped us be a success.
Before we were ever in after school & summer camp, extended day used to skate with us every Wednesday. That’s where I first met her 13 years ago- although she had my older sisters in after school care! We became fast friends and bonded over fried catfish and hush puppies.
After Covid, my sister had passed away, I had just had my first baby, and I was needing a break from the classroom. The school district had closed extended day, and said, “Harley, you really need to think about opening it up at the skating rink. These parents NEED somewhere for their kids to go!”
We literally had boots to the ground to get things rolling and she and my dad were by me every step. The whole program is a mirror of what she did for 30+ years.
I still have a text on my phone from her “People are reaching out about extended day at the skating rink. I gave them your number. I’m so excited!”
She never missed my birthday. Never missed a happy Mother’s Day.
To say we are going to miss her is an understatement.
Her legacy lives through our legacy. Every summer we have a training and talk about what she set up! Now her after school kids have kids coming to our program.
Today and every day we honor you Ms Sharon! Firm, but fair. Loyal and loving. Respected and loved by all.
We love you!
Rest easy, and as my mom said-
She is not sitting at the feet of Jesus. She’s with alll those babies that didn’t get to stay here on earth with us. And I know my sister is chatting it up with her too, and probably welcomed her with 100% beef hotdogs right off the grill! 🤍
We will post arrangements as soon as we see them- we know we are not the only ones whose lives were changed by her!
Sharing some pictures from her surprise retirement party, and her doing what she loves-supporting the kids!
