Magnet Moment: Jesse Trail RN

When patients get discharged after completing chemotherapy, they ring a bell located by the exit of E3. The ringing of the bell signifies different things for different patients. In general, this rite of passage signifies the end of an old chapter and the start of a new one. As an oncology nurse and to honor his brother, Jesse donated a beautiful bell to the E3 unit labeled “Raymond’s Bell”.

At the bottom of the bell lays a beautiful quote from the philosopher Khalil Gibran.
“Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.”
-Khalil Gibran

This quote reflects the strength and character that Jesse’s brother displayed throughout his life. Jesse honors his brother every day in his work as an oncology nurse.

Unit Tree! Staff gathered together and made leaves with their fingerprints and wrote words from our staff retreat on caps. This hangs on our unit and makes me think of growing together 🌳 💐

3 years, over $20,000 raised, and an uncountable number of medicine caps! ⚪️🟡🟢🔵🟣

After much thought and consideration, Caps4Cancers will be taking an indefinite pause on its traditional structure.

What does that mean?

While Caps4Cancers has been very fulfilling and warms my heart by the impact it’s made, it’s time for me to invest my time and energy into other things. I will no longer be doing my usual monthly fundraisers and donations. The Etsy site will slowly dwindle down as the last badges are sold.

I will still be intermittently using Caps4Cancers as a creative outlet. I’ve made a couple of canvas for friends out of caps. I want to continue to make holiday ornaments for patients. I may do a fundraiser here or there with my nursing unit.

The last 3 years showed me so much that I probably won’t be able to adequately describe in a social media post. All in all, the oncology community is a powerful group. It’s been beautiful hearing the stories of so many lives that were impacted by the nonprofits we supported. It’s been humbling being able to create something that made so much of an emotional and financial impact. I hope to continue to make a stamp on this world where I can and use my time and energy to invest in other things I am passionate about.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement in this journey. You made this vision come to life in more ways than one. This isn’t the end, it’s just goodbye for now. See ya soon!

With Love,
Casey & Caps4Cancers

Meet Casey Schade a registered nurse working in the specialty of oncology. Casey Scchade started a fundraiser called "Caps4Cancers" in May of 2018. Schade wanted to do something extra to support her cancer patients other than just providing them with bedside nursing care. Schade started collecting the lids of medicine vial caps from work and used these items to create unique designs for retractable badge holders. Schade made designs such as colorful flowers, animals, movie characters, princesses, etc. She would sell the badges on her unit and on Etsy.

🔹No filter on these pictures and no filter on my heart when I tell about the incredible adventure we had with this past week!

🔹If you haven’t heard of them, is a non-profit organization that provides life-changing outdoor adventures for young adults impacted by cancer and other serious health conditions.

🔹Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, First Descents also extended this gift to healthcare workers affected by the pandemic.

🔹I got to spend 3 days in Santa Barbara with the most amazing group of healthcare workers. I went into this trip feeling burnt out from work and eager to experience some respite and recovery. I think I came away from the trip with more energy and passion for nursing then I ever would have expected.

🔹I’m so thankful for the incredible supportive and engaged group I got to be with! We challenged each other in kayaking and surfing, but also to be better providers and people. Everyday is a precious gift and it’s a privilege to be
