HDAP Sunday School: HBCU Art Collections, Figures, Facts & Findings
Did you know that the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is home of the Mosely Gallery? The Mosely Gallery was named after artist Jimmie Lee Mosely, first chairman of the fine arts department.
Jimmie Lee Mosley was born January 17, 1927. He began his studies at Florida A&M University
in 1947. At that time, the university didn’t have an art education program, causing him to transfer to Texas State University for Negroes (Texas State University) where he became the university’s first student to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art Education. Later in 1974, Mosley received his master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University
In 1951, Mosley joined the University of Maryland Eastern Shore faculty as an assistant professor of ceramics where he built his career as an artist and developed the college’s art department. He laid the foundation for the Mosely Gallery and exhibited his art across the country.
Today, the Mosely Gallery thrives as a teaching resource in the fine arts that enhances the liberal arts experience for the entire university community. It also serves as a catalyst and center for life-long learning, research, cultural recreation and pleasure to the wider public community, locally and regionally.
