Simply Martha

Simply Martha Your place to find everything art: Modern abstract, illustration, photography, prints and much more. Ours is a story of love.

Our love for everything art, and for each other. It started 20 years ago when we were freshmen in Art School, and has evolved into a full time job where we feel lucky to combine our passion for what we love and turn it into a way of living to support our growing family.

Happy !
Here with my daughter next to Fight or Flight by Shara Hughes at the Saint Louis Art Museum.

In this layered composition, sinuous forms and spatial distortions coincide with expressive brushstrokes and vivid color, creating a space both otherworldly and familiar. Seemingly abstract at first glance, Fight or Flight slowly divulges its relationship to landscape. A red sun peeks out in the upper left corner, and a sliver of turquoise-blue sea appears in the distance. Shara Hughes refers to her paintings as psychological or invented landscapes. Composed spontaneously, rather than from preliminary sketches, her works radiate a complexity that derives from memory, observation, and illusionism.

The "Inside Out 11M" project uses art to raise awareness about the need for immigration reform. After stopping in Grand Rapids and Lansing, the installation came to the north end of The Belt in Detroit last Thursday. The installation will stay in place for a week, so make sure to see it before it's gone!

More than 100 photos of Detroiters were snapped and printed out in a large size to create a collage for the 'InsideOut 11M' project

Rest in peace Mr. Carle. Your legacy lives on.

From the Eric Carle Team: It is with heavy hearts that we share that Eric Carle, author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and many other beloved classics, passed away on Sunday, May 23rd at the age of 91.

When asked why he thinks The Very Hungry Caterpillar has remained popular for so long, Carle said, “I think it is a book of hope. Children need hope. You, little insignificant caterpillar can grow up into a beautiful butterfly and fly into the world with your talent.”

Thank you, Eric Carle for sharing your great talent with so many generations of young readers.
