Workshop Wednesday: a peek inside our dye mixing room...
It may not be one of the fanciest parts of our new studio, but it is definitely one of the most useful!
For safety and contamination control, dry dye powders need to be mixed in an enclosed space. We didn’t have a dedicated mixing room in our old studio, so we commandeered one of the small bathrooms and mixed dye on a folding table right between the sink and toilet, then carried it back to the dye room through a carpeted hallway. 😅
When we first toured our new space, we couldn’t believe our luck that directly adjacent to the area we hoped to use for dyeing was a small, separate room that was perfect for dye mixing. If you’ve ever done a commercial or residential buildout, you know how quickly the costs add up whenever someone mentions adding or removing walls.
This room stores all of our powdered dyes and has a mixing bench just large enough for two people, along with our scales, pitchers, equipment and other odds and ends. This is where we mix our concentrated liquid dyes, which, one prepped, can be moved more into the main dye room for further measuring, blending and use.
Having a room dedicated specifically to this step has made our workflow so much safer and more efficient.
Today we mixed up some small amounts of sample dyes for our new fabric collection (some beautiful autumn oranges, golds and plums were in this batch!)
