Delighted to have contributed to a recent article in St. Louis Magazine along with my neighbor, Katherine Bernhardt discussing all things topiary.

I like to incorporate topiaries as a styling tool throughout interior and exterior design. They are timeless and interesting regardless of a home’s design aesthetic.

Enjoying the last days of summer before school starts. This home was in need of rescuing from builder’s beige when my clients bought it. We painted every square inch of the home, changed every light fixture and added layers of softness in their favorite color palette of creams, greys and navy. Here’s a few snapshots of what we worked on together.

All the touches we added are a nod to the home owners’ style and the way they like to live and entertain.

This primary bathroom got a major overhaul. It is almost unrecognizable from where we started. Every inch of this space was removed, repositioned, and made into a functionally beautiful bathroom.

This project required new plumbing, flooring, doors sealed off to create a more useful space and then all the pretty layers you see here. Kohler walnut vanity and fixtures, marble countertops, floors, shower walls, and a custom designed shower enclosure were an important part of the design. The Greek key marble flooring detail in the shower might be my favorite touch. I wanted this space to feel elevated and timeless. I like things to be beautiful no matter what but in a primary bathroom, it has to be highly functional.

Lighting and a free standing antique mirror add a little charm. The walls are painted Healing Aloe by Benjamin Moore. Sketches done by my talented brother Nick Openlander make this room complete.

It’s healthy in life to sometimes stop and reflect on how far you’ve come. Restoration projects are no different. Depending on the size and scale of the project, you really have to dig deep into your patience reserves to see it through. This project started with years of neglect and ended with timeless, classic beauty.

Details matter. High quality workmanship matters. Finding finishing touches that meet the home’s level of grandeur and age matter. Restoring an old home takes time and dedication from all involved. When you do it right, it looks like it never was in decay. Hopefully, it looks like it’s a well loved reflection of the family that lives there.

My goal when designing this kitchen was to create a warm, inviting space that functioned efficiently for a growing family and blended seamlessly with the rest of this home built in 1917. High end finishes, roman shades made of Scalamandre fabric, vintage and custom lighting (no can lights, please and thank you), ample Calacutta Oro marble countertops that serve as a timeless backdrop for an ever expanding collection of Italian ceramics, and the copper range hood are just a few my favorite details in this kitchen.

My objective when designing a kitchen (or a whole house) is to create a beautiful environment that is welcoming, and a source of comfort, joy and functionality. Swipe ➡️ to slide 3 for the “before”. I think that was accomplished here.

Small space. Big impact. A large scale charcoal sketch created years ago by my talented brother, Nick Openlander makes a statement. High quality, original art always stands the test of time. I covered the walls and ceiling in Buttercup by Benjamin Moore and selected a leather, cork backed tile flooring for its durability and looks (of course).

I’m in the process of doing some rebranding and updating my portfolio. In the meantime, I am taking some time to reflect on my design process and style over the years. If a floral or interiors project is left entirely up to me, you can bet on seeing warm earth tones and lots of pretty things. I am not a minimalist. I love wrapping a room in a deep green or brown. Layers of texture, color and, hopefully, comfort. Original art, unlacquered brass and flowers. Always flowers. A beautiful room to me reflects a home owner’s life experiences, what holds beauty and meaning to them.

I recently had the opportunity to teach a career conversations class at . The subjects, of course, were interior and floral design. A group of ten young women interested in learning more about the basics of design and the business process behind all the pretty gathered together for a hands on presentation. We reviewed fabric, rug, tile and paint samples before moving onto floral design, which you see in the pictures here.

We also talked about the non tangible aspects of being entrepreneurial, particularly in a creative business. A few things that I’ve learned over the years that I shared with them are the importance of clear communication, high level client service, knowing your worth, optimistism, and being inherently confident in your creative abilities.

I came away from this experience hopeful and excited for these young women. Not just this group but many CJ students participate in discussions like these across varying types of professions. A goal of this program is to help the students better understand how their strengths, interests and God given abilities can translate into real world careers and experiences.

I was impressed by their curiosity, attentiveness, respect and engagement during my time with them. The future is bright !
