Tomorrow, as part of the final WashU Film Festival Screening (Narrative Shorts B at 5:00PM in Simon 01!) we will be screening one of the first-ever student films, THE MAID OF MCMILLAN, made at in 1916 by WashU’s very own student theater group, Thyrsus. This incredible piece of school and film history showcased many buildings and locations familiar to WashU students today! The Inaugural WashU Film Festival marks a new chapter in film culture at WashU, so it is fitting we recognize the first chapter.

Calling students! We need more festival programmers!

From now until the end of August, we are in need of more student programmers—that’s YOU—to help us watch, review, and ultimately decide on films to be included in the first annual WashU Film Festival! No experience necessary, we will teach you everything you need to know!

What you do:
Watch and review a selection of short films each week from now until the end of August, when we announce our official programming selections! We will work with your availability when assigning programming.

What you gain:
Learn how film festivals are run and what goes into film criticism
Get early viewing for an awesome selection of global student films
Interesting experience for your resume
Help make the first WashU Film Festival a success!

Requirements: Must be a current WashU student, and you must let us know if you intend to submit any films to the festival—you may still program but not in the categories you are submitting for!

Documentary 📸 Short
Experimental ⏳ Short - films that do not fit strictly into traditional narrative formats welcomed here!
5 Minutes ⏰ or Shorter
WashU Student Film - open only to students

Submission note: We are accepting only short films for the festival's first year so as to exhibit a greater number of student filmmakers overall; however, we do not have a strict runtime cutoff for submissions. If you have any questions about whether your film is eligible or which categories to submit to, please reach out to us and we will work to help you find the best fit for your work! More details on submission and contact forms can be found on our website and on FilmFreeway (links in bio 🔗).
