We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of James Slover. He was the lighting designer for our 2013 production of OH, HELL! and his work graced many other stages in our city over the years. James was a positive and energetic presence who didn’t just brighten rooms literally but metaphorically, and he will be greatly missed.

We lost a huge part of our R-S family today with the passing of Steve Boston. On paper, Steve was a board member from 2016 to 2018, contributing the non-theatre practitioner point of view. In reality, he was so much more. He loved theatre in a way that was totally without pretension and suffered no nonsense. He appreciated most the weird and small and scrappy, but he’d be at every show, even if it was summed up as, “I don’t like musicals, but that one was pretty good.” And while from other people that might be a line, you could always trust Steve to tell you what he actually thought.

We don’t have a lot of photos of Steve at R-S, certainly not enough to illustrate his impact. But our 2017 year-end family photo (the arrow points him out) sums up how we’ll remember him: A steady presence offering an assured opinion with no BS who has found himself somehow in the middle of a pack of artists, and rather than being repelled by it, he’s totally game to see where this ends up.

Over his last years, he was fortunately able to dedicate himself to his favorite activities: Travel, concerts, and good food and drink, always with his wife, Melissa, by his side. It is an honor that he considered continuing to make time for R-S a worthy choice. Going forward, we will be dedicating our audience accessibility efforts to Steve in hopes that more people will be able to discover the joy he found there. Maybe we’ll even be able to persuade some people who think they don’t like musicals…

If you had “landscape design conference” for our next appearance, you win! We had a great time yesterday presenting on creating a theatrical production concept and translating those principles to landscape architecture. Thanks to StL Professional Landscape Designers Roundtable for organizing and wallflowerdesign for hosting!

Tonight we intended to be holding our first rehearsal for ONCE. Instead, in order to prioritize the health and safety of our artists, staff and audience members, we are announcing an indefinite postponement.

Along with our coproducers at The November Theater Co., we hope to be able to bring this lovely show and the amazing team we assembled to St. Louis soon, but for now we wish you all the best of health in 2022, and encourage everyone to get vaccinated and boosted, wear masks, and do everything you can to reduce the risk and uncertainty of the pandemic.

Stay tuned for what’s next!

Sunday evening shows for BREADCRUMBS mean you can take full advantage of a beautiful fall day and still take in a show! And the 7:00 start time will still get you out by 9:00, for those who have to be up in the morning.

Or maybe you’re not an outdoorsy type? Then make it a theatrical double feature by adding a matinee! May we suggest…

Are you one of those people who finishes a movie and immediately starts Googling to find out if they got things right? After the Friday, October 15th, performance of BREADCRUMBS, we’ll do the work for you, giving you a chance to hear about the characters’ psychology straight from an expert.

Production dramaturg Rachel Hanks is also a licensed clinical social worker and registered play therapist with specialties in development trauma and attachment. She’ll tell us the effects Alida and Beth’s childhoods have on the behavior we see onstage and how we know playwright Jennifer Haley really did her homework.

This discussion starts at 9:45pm and is open to all ticket holders, regardless of performance, with seating on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tickets at MetroTix or at the door.
