Day 4️⃣ began with breakfast at the hotel then a 40-minute drive from Figueira da Foz to Coimbra.
🏛️Coimbra was the capital of Portugal from 1131 to 1255. During the late Middle Ages, Coimbra evolved into a major cultural center. This was largely helped by the establishment of the first Portuguese university in 1290 in Lisbon and its relocation to Coimbra in 1308, making it the oldest academic institution in the Portuguese-speaking world. Apart from attracting many European and international students, it is visited by tourists for its monuments and history.
🎓Our day was spent viewing the university grounds and buildings, notably the 400-year old Porta Férrea gate to which students traditionally (and illegally) climb and tie pieces of their ripped school uniforms upon graduation.
We strolled the steep cobblestone streets and ate lunch independently in various cafes before arriving at Fado ao Centro music presentation. Fado is a style of Portuguese music that originated around 1820. Our performers were extraordinary and we definitely cleared our throats for their talent and skill!
⛪️We then walked to Paróquia de Santa Cruz to rehearse for that evening’s concert. Founded in 1131, the Monastery of the Holy Cross was the most important monastic house during the early Portuguese monarchy. Because the first two kings of Portugal are buried in the church, it was granted the status of National Pantheon.
We managed to hold a brief rehearsal as we took in the extraordinary beauty and history of the church. After rehearsal, we had a quick ice cream and boba tea break and returned to give a focused performance to a very appreciative audience. The church’s acoustics were among the finest The St. Louis Children's Choirs has ever had the privilege in which to sing. We were deeply grateful for this very special opportunity and we thank the church staff for their grace and welcoming spirit.
The evening wrapped with a group dinner in Coimbra and a drive back to Figueira da Foz. Our singers were understandably exhausted from the long, hot, but exciting day. On to the next!
