Bear-y big news! 🐻‍❄️ A new polar bear is headed to the Saint Louis Zoo!

Five-year-old female Laerke (LAIR-keh) is expected to arrive this fall from Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. She'll join nearly-4-year-old male polar bear Kallu at McDonnell Polar Bear Point on a breeding recommendation from the Polar Bear Population Alliance. We expect Laerke will debut before the end of this year, but introductions between her and Kallu will take some time. Guests may not see the pair together in the habitat until early 2027.

Polar bears are listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and face a high risk of extinction in the wild. Laerke's move is part of a collaborative effort among AZA-accredited institutions to help protect the future of this vulnerable species. We can't wait for you to meet her! See photos of Laerke and learn more ➡️ stlzoo.org/laerke

Jubel Foundation Destination Discovery, the Zoo's new experience for children and families. Sheep walks are weather dependent and routes may vary.
