The bolt-from-the-blue debut from French provocateur Julia Ducournau (Titane), Raw is a wild, visceral coming-of-age art-horror cannibal jam unlike anything that came before it. Garance Marillier stars as Justine, a sheltered, vegetarian veterinary student whose first taste of raw meat during a brutal hazing ritural awakens a ravenous hunger she can’t explain. Justine experiences a body‑horror metamorphosis that’s equal parts tender, terrifying, and intoxicating in this weird and wild journey that depicts self‑discovery as a carnivorous fever dream. Girlhood returns to Arkadin Cinema on September 13 with OLD ENOUGH, an overlooked coming-of-age classic. Playing at 5 p.m.

In the 1980s there certainly was no dearth of pr***en coming-of-age-cinema, but few that portray the purity, terror and excitement of that specific time of growing up with the authenticity of the tragically overlooked Old Enough. Every day on her way to the summer camp bus, 11-year-old Lonnie Sloan (Sarah Boyd) passes a group of neighborhood kids engaged in some mischief that she, with her upper-class upbringing, can scarcely fathom. On a morning like any other she encounters the streetwise Karen (Rainbow Harvest), who talks sheltered Lonnie into playing hooky and takes her out of her brownstone bubble and into a blue collar world full of shoplifting and Catholicism. The girls couldn’t come from more different backgrounds, but the exoticism of the other’s life makes their newfound friendship instantly magnetic. Following the girls through a sliver of their summer, writer-director Marisa Silver captures that feeling of stepping outside of your nest for the first time.

Planning to see the new Street Fighter film this October? Come get an early dose at Arkadin Cinema this Wednesday at screening of STREET FIGHTER II: THE ANIMATED MOVIE, playing on September 2 at 7 p.m. Before the film we'll have a Street Fighter II video game battle in the theatrer! Arrive at 6:30 p.m. for your chance to play!

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (1994) is a faithful anime adaptation of the very loose story from the hugely popular fighting arcade game Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers produced by Capcom. Chinese Interpol agent Chun-Li seeks the help of American Air Force Captain Guile to infiltrate the criminal organization Shadowlaw, run by leader M. Bison and his brutal bodyguards Balrog, Vega and Sagat. Meanwhile, Japanese martial artist Ryu travels the world seeking a challenger worthy of competition, since his American training partner Ken Masters has left to start a life with his girlfriend, Eliza. SWEENEY TOOD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET plays at Arkadin on Friday, September 4 at 7 p.m.

An bloody-red, inky-black adaptation of one of Stephen Sondheim’s razor-sharp revenge opera, Sweeney Todd is musical theatre at its most deliciously macabre. Johnny Depp stars as the eponymous barber, who returns to London after years of wrongful exile on a mission to hunt down the judge who destroyed his life. Along the way, he teams up with the opportunistic Mrs. Lovett (a never-better Helena Bonham Carter) and transforms his barbershop into a slaughterhouse with Mrs. Lovett’s bakery as the perfect cover. Just don’t ask what’s in those meat pies! A tale of obsession set to one of Sondheim’s greatest and most complex scores, Sweeney Todd remains a scintillating showcase of Tim Burton’s inimitable ability to transform gloomy outsiders into seductive paramours. Gothic, grisly, and grimly funny, Sweeney Todd is always a bloody good time.

Bernard Rose preceded the breakout success of Candyman with this surreal exploration of childhood trauma. Following an injury incurred while playing hooky from school, young Anna finds herself bedridden, with nothing to do but draw. So draw she does, beginning with a landscape, and then a house, and then a boy—and soon she finds that her drawings are influencing her dreams, and creating a world that exists on the other side of the veil. And while she delights in exploring her dream world, it becomes clear that something wicked resides there as well.

An unsettling depiction of childhood fantasy, Paperhouse occupies a singular niche within ‘80s horror, and informed such later classics as Pan’s Labyrinth and Stranger Things. Before it described MAGA mouth-breathers and internet idiots, C.H.U.D. stood for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. Douglas Cheek’s cult ’80s favorite once again crawls out of the sewers and onto the big screen to provide the ultimate underground movie experience. In downtown Manhattan, a police captain’s hunt for his missing wife uncovers a series of mysterious disappearances in the area. When he extends his search into the tunnels and sewers below, it soon becomes clear that something monstrous lurks beneath the city streets – and it’s not staying down there much longer! Uniting John Heard and Daniel Stern years before Home Alone and featuring an early appearance by beloved St. Louis native John Goodman, C.H.U.D. updates the 1950s creature feature for the 1980s with gloriously goopy, gloppy, gory results.
