SPRING 2024 - painting (with addendums)

This Spring (2024) I am offering painting as the main focus. Within painting many other media may be introduced and utilized, for those that would like to step outside of traditional painting.

Classes (1hr : 15minute sessions) will be held on Fridays at 9:00 and 10:30. (If there are not enough students for two sections, class will be at 9AM. $80 a month (4 Fridays in a month) $20 off per added sibling. $75 is a one time materials fee (non-refundable).

Lewis Home Art Classes offer:
An in-home studio space where kids can explore visual texts. Texts as in, colors and their mixing, positive and negative space relationships, materials and their various attributes.
Via:
Painting and drawing - the mixing of colors and various mark making media
Collage, the appropriation and interactions of various pictures, creating new narratives and sometimes silly pictures
Fiber elements, sewing (and appliqué) into existing paintings and pictures. A stitch enhances work, creating focal pints and areas of interest.
Ink block printing, figure ground relationships, rhythm, repetition, decor and color theory
Index, a visual component relating back to how a mark would have been created

We make things / creations in the studio. Students learn to make, problem-solve and interpret the world around them with various media, in hopefully a stress-free setting with new friends.

Fall2023 art classes
Lewis Home Expression/2D Mixed Media Class (St Augustine Beach)
September - December (the first Friday of December)
Time: Fridays (A9:00-10:15 or B10:30-11:45)
8 spots available per class
ages 6yrs and up
Monthly fee with semester commitment: $20 per week, each additional sibling is $20 off per month. Example 4 weeks in a month for two students - first $80 second is $60, total $140
One time Materials fee: $75
This Fall, classes will focus on 2 Dimensional works derived of various forms through mixed media. We will look at traditional and nontraditional forms of mark/picture making.
Objectives:
We will be creating objective (representational) art and nonobjective (nonrepresentational abstracted) art, ie, working with a still life and/or images one can recognize vs. purely marks and/or colors on canvas.
color theory - color mixing, primary / secondary / tertiary / complementary and analogous colors / high-key and low-key colors
mark making - optical mixing / stippling / line sensitivity or the emotion of a line / semiotics (How can a mark express different ideas?)
value - How light interacts with objects. / How colors react to light and shadow.
shapes and marks - How shapes (figures), activate an area (ground).
bricolage - using what one has at hand. / various modes of mixed media
appropriation - of materials / stenciling / collage / using uncommon materials
materials - canvas / panels / paper / acrylic paints and mediums / adhesives / plaster / and other appliqué elements

Time(s): Fridays 9:00-10:15AM or 10:30-11:45AM

ages 7yrs and up

Expression via Mixed Media Students will have the opportunity to explore different media in a guided class with topics including the following: expression (and catharsis), the elements of design (the building blocks of visual communication), optics and the various ways we understand the visual world, and how artists have used different media over the centuries.
Objectives: (problem solving from many different perspectives)
-working with clay (additive and subtractive processes)
and the firing and glazing of clay works
-plaster molds (imprinting and indexing objects)
-color theory (primary, secondary and tertiary colors)
-stippling and optical mixing
-block printing
-plaster and foam carving

Monthly fee with semester commitment: Monthly Breakdown

September (5 sessions) $100 per child / $80 per sibling
October (3 sessions - There will not be class on the 14th) $60 per child / $40 per sibling
November (3 sessions - There will not be class on BlackFriday) $60 per child / $40 per sibling
December (3 sessions - Our last class will end on the 16th) $60 per child / $40 per sibling

One time Materials fee: (I will be providing canvases, some brushes and paint additives - gel mediums and oil mediums) $50
I will provide links to paint sets. What I list will have the quality needed and desired.

We will explore traditional forms of painting. You and your child will choose between working with Acrylics or Oils.
We will be looking at:
-traditional still-life painting (this will be our avenue for instilling a core understanding of principles in painting)
-chiaroscuro (how to use lights and darks, high contrast)
-high-key painting
-low-key painting
-modes of expression in painting
-we will work on self expression building upon the principles exercised in traditional still life painting
