With spring just around the corner we are thinking about our favorite activity, road trips and equally important, a great gas station! We found this unique filling station near Littleville while working on our Jackson’s Military Road project. Judy’s was complete with hand drawn illustrations at the pump, hanging plants, used dvd’s for sale inside, a covid era window for transactions, and they host pop up farm stands. We have so many unique and interesting places in NW Alabama, go find yours!

Condolences to the friends and family of guitar legend Travis Wammack, who passed Friday. Travis was a prodigy from from a young age, making his first recording at 11. His career included recording the instrumental hit “Scratchy” in 1964, recording many hits and sessions as part of The FAME gang, and leading Little Richard’s band for over a decade, among other accomplishments.

Courtland panorama.

The town of Courtland, in Lawrence County, is one of Alabama’s oldest towns and rose to prominence and prosperity in the 19th century as a trade center on the Tuscumbia, Courtland, Decatur rail line. Courtland still boasts some of the finest examples of late 19th century and early 20th century architecture.

We were saddened to hear about the recent passing of blues musician Microwave Dave Gallagher. Dave’s frequented The Shoals, regularly playing Swampers bar or Champy’s and was a decades long mainstay at the WC Handy Music Festival, often playing multiple shows a day, including his beloved library kids show tour. Our team was able to interview and photograph Dave on many occasions. Thank you Microwave Dave!
