Springfield Symphony Orchestra The SSO is the largest professional orchestra in Massachusetts outside of Boston.

Each season, we produce classical and pops performances, plus educational, cultural & outreach programs that benefit the communities in which we serve. The Springfield Symphony Orchestra performed its first concert in 1944, at its current home - Springfield Symphony Hall, which was originally built as the Municipal Auditorium. That performance received great reviews and was even recorded by the Office of War Information for rebroadcast to our troops overseas. Today, the SSO is the largest professional symphony orchestra in Massachusetts, outside of Boston. It consists of over 80 musicians from the NE region of the United States and Canada, and holds many performances in a given season - as either the full orchestra or in ensemble formats. SSO concerts are typically recorded and re-broadcast over New England Public Radio (88.5FM), the area NPR station. The Springfield Symphony Orchestra is also the parent organization of two youth orchestras - the Springfield Youth Sinfonia (formally Young Person's Philharmonia) and the Springfield Youth Orchestra (formally Young Person's Symphony). Both of these ensembles offer young musicians a chance to play in a full orchestra, an option not offered in many schools. Some music is written for an instrument. This music was written for the person playing it.

Composer Andrés Martín created the "Morgante Violin Concerto" specifically with violinist Samuel Vargas in mind, shaping the music around Samuel’s unique voice, strengths, and expressive style. In other words, this isn’t simply a concerto Samuel learned to perform. It’s a piece that was built to sound like him.

But the story goes even deeper. "Morgante" was commissioned in memory of the late conductor Michael Morgan, giving the work a powerful foundation of remembrance, connection, and legacy. Its three movements, Odyssey, Prayer, and Ascension, take listeners on a journey that feels deeply personal, yet universal.

On October 24, Samuel brings the piece to Symphony Hall with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra.

The search continues. Next on the podium: Deanna Tham

On Saturday, October 24, Music Director finalist Deanna Tham takes the SSO stage for Opening Night, becoming the second finalist our community will have the opportunity to experience live.

Deanna is the Music Director of the Redlands Symphony and has worked with orchestras across the country, including Oregon, Fort Worth, Nashville, National, Atlanta, and San Francisco symphonies. She was also a semifinalist in the 2024 La Maestra Conducting Competition.

And this night is about more than watching from your seat. After the concert, patrons will have the opportunity to share their feedback with the Music Director Search Committee.

Springfield hasn't experienced a Music Director search like this in decades. This is your chance to see a finalist in action, make your voice heard, and be part of a decision that will help shape the next chapter of the SSO and live music in your city.

We enjoyed a beautiful night at Protocol with live music, connecting with other communities, and introducing folks to our new Director of Youth Programs and Education, Lee!

A quick note from your Marketing Manager (aka the person writing this caption): you’d think I could manage to get a photo of the guest of honor.. yet, here we are. I promise Lee was there!!

Jokes aside, getting our Springfield Symphony Youth Orchestras out into the community is about so much more than learning how to play an instrument. It’s about giving youth musicians real world experience, building confidence, and creating opportunities.

Community is at the heart of everything we do.

For our 26/27 Season Opening Night, we're proud to partner with Rick's Place, an incredible local nonprofit providing grief support to children, teens and families throughout Western Massachusetts.

We recently had the opportunity to visit Rick's Place, learn more about the meaningful work they do, and hear firsthand why spaces like this matter so much in our community.

This season, we want to use our stage for more than just music. We want to introduce our audiences to the organizations making a difference right here at home and help their stories reach even more people.

We're honored to welcome Rick's Place into Symphony Hall on Saturday, October 24. Visit their table in the lobby from 6-7:30 PM and during intermission to learn more about the work they do!
