🐾 It's International Zookeeper Week!
When you visit a Zoo, you see the Animals. But behind every healthy, active Animal is a team of People doing work most visitors will never see.
🧹 Zookeepers clean habitats, prepare diets, maintain exhibits, monitor behavior, administer medications, assist veterinary teams & keep detailed records.
🧠 They create enrichment that encourages Animals to climb, forage, hunt, investigate, problem-solve & use the incredible adaptations they evolved with.
🩺 Through Cooperative Care Training, Keepers can teach Animals to voluntarily participate in procedures like weighing, injections, blood draws, hoof care & physical examinations, often reducing stress & the need for anesthesia.
👀 Keepers know their Animals so well, a tiny change in appetite, movement, behavior or personality can be an important early sign that something isn't right.
🌎 Their work also reaches far beyond Zoo grounds. Zookeepers contribute to Conservation Breeding, Research, Education, Wildlife Recovery Programs & Efforts to Protect Species in the Wild.
It's dirty. It's physical. It's demanding. And much of the most important work happens before the gates open & after visitors go home.
This week, we're celebrating the People behind the habitats. 💚
🐾 Great Animal Care doesn't happen by accident. It happens because dedicated People show up every single day.
