This is one of those topics that gets surprisingly passionate answers in the quilting world — some people swear by pre-washing every time, others skip it unless the fabric specifically calls for it.

Cutting is more satisfying than piecing. A walking foot is non-negotiable, no matter how simple the project. It's okay to buy fabric with zero plan for it.

New to quilting? Here are 3 fabric mistakes we see beginners make all the time (and how to avoid them) 🧵

1. Buying exactly the amount the pattern calls for — always grab a little extra, fabric dye lots vary and you don't want to come up short.
2. Skipping the prewash question — it matters more for some fabrics (hi, flannel) than others.
3. Forgetting to check the width — most quilting cotton is 44/45", but not always, and it changes your yardage math.

Machine piecing is fast and consistent, but there's something meditative about hand-piecing that a lot of quilters love, even if it takes ten times as long. We go back and forth depending on the project and how much patience we have that week.
