In light of recent news about removal and banning of books in schools, Midsouth is choosing to use its platform of creating accessibility to arts & culture to support a Banned Book Drive.
Books, like all arts and culture, may not suit everyone's opinions, but to deny access broadly instead of creating opportunity for healthy discourse is more detrimental than any exposure could ever be. It is for each child to read and inquire, and for parents and guardians to take a hands-on approach in aiding their understanding, facilitate discussion and encourage the further explorations of their thoughts and feelings. It is not the place of a small subset of people to decide what is or is not offensive and to enforce their parenting preference for all.
We will collect donations of used titles as well as monetary contributions to be used to purchase copies of any titles being suggested for removal or challenged by local school group. These books will be purchased at cost from the publisher at a rate much cheaper than retail purchases. Monetary donations will be tax-deductible as we are a 501c3 non-profit organization.
Books will be distributed throughout the affected areas for youth to access and swap, including but not limited to Little Free Libraries, reading parties and book clubs.
