This Friday (April 24), we hope you’ll join us at The Spartan Theatre for "Minister of Sorrow," a powerful one-woman show filled with music, myth, and the spirit of the Appalachian Mountains.

This special performance is also a chance to support the next generation of theatre artists at SFCC. Funds raised through ticket sales will help support student scholarships and travel opportunities for important learning experiences such as the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) conference and the American College Theater Festival.

We’re also especially proud that this production features the talents of several Spartan Theatre and SFCC alumni, including Hazel Bean, Sarah Dahmen, and Patty Garegnani. Their work is a beautiful reminder that the artistic community built here continues to grow, return, and give back in meaningful ways.
If you’re able, come spend the evening with us, support live theatre, and help invest in student artists and their futures.

This Friday (April 24), we invite you to join us for "The Writer’s Process and Creative Resilience," a conversation with local Spokane playwright Pam Kingsley that offers students and community members a closer look at the many different ways writers build, sustain, and return to their creative practice.

This panel will explore the personal processes of working playwrights and writers, from first sparks of inspiration to drafting, revising, and finding ways to keep going even when the work feels difficult. It is an opportunity to hear honest reflections on discipline, creative rhythm, and the realities of living an artistic life.

For students especially, this conversation offers an encouraging reminder that there is no single correct way to create. Each artist finds their own habits, methods, and pathways into the work, and learning to trust that process is an important part of creative growth.

We are deeply grateful to SFCC’s EDI Office, Francisco Salinas, and our partners at Stage Left Theater for helping make this event possible.

This Wednesday (April 22), we hope you’ll join us for "Creativity, Careers, and Community in Spokane’s Arts Ecosystem," a special conversation, moderated by Sarah Dahmen, with working artists from Spokane about what it means to build a creative life right here in our region.

Too often, students and emerging artists hear the message that serious artistic work only happens somewhere else, or that creativity must be set aside in adulthood. This panel pushes back against that idea by bringing together artists whose lived experience shows that creative careers, meaningful community connection, and artistic purpose can thrive here in Spokane.

This is a wonderful opportunity to hear directly from working artists about creativity, professional life, and the role the arts play in shaping both individual lives and the larger community around us.

We are deeply grateful to SFCC’s EDI Office, Francisco Salinas, and our partners at Stage Left Theater for helping make this event possible.

We have an exciting week of arts events coming up at SFCC, and we would love to have you join us.

This week’s series brings together live performance, conversations with working artists, and a celebration of the many ways creativity shapes community. It is also a wonderful chance to spend time with regional artists, hear more about creative life in Spokane, and support the work happening here at The Spartan Theatre.

On Wednesday, April 22 from 11:30 AM–1:00 PM in Building 5 Room 113, we will host Creativity, Career, and Community in Spokane’s Arts Ecosystem, a panel featuring working artists from Spokane speaking about artistic life, professional growth, and the value of building a creative practice right here in our region.

On Friday, April 24 from 11:30 AM–1:00 PM in Building 5 Room 113, we will present The Writer’s Process and Creative Resilience, a conversation exploring the many ways playwrights and writers sustain their craft, develop their process, and continue creating through the realities of everyday life.

Then on Friday, April 24 at 7:30 PM in The Spartan Theatre (Building 5 Room 129), we will present the evening performance of "Minister of Sorrow," a moving one-woman show infused with music, myth, and the spirit of the Appalachian Mountains.

We are deeply grateful to SFCC’s EDI Office, Francisco Salinas, and our partners at Stage Left Theater for helping make these events possible.

We were digging through some old files in the Spartan Theatre archives and came across this completely real and definitely not suspicious newspaper clipping from the late 90s/early 2000s…

Apparently, there was a brief period where we had some unusual challenges with student attendance.

Wishing everyone a joyful, creative, and lightly mischievous April Fools’ Day from all of us in the SFCC Drama Program.

And remember: whether you’re human or cryptid, we’d still love to see you in a drama class. Spring quarter starts on Monday April 6th.

All are welcome!

Congratulations to George Morse on his retirement after nine years of extraordinary service to Spartan Theatre at Spokane Falls Community College.

George’s contributions to our program cannot be overstated. Over the years, he brought not only his skill, knowledge, and care to every production, but also a steady and calming presence to the scene shop that shaped the experience of hundreds of students. George taught through patience, kindness, good humor, and example. He never met challenges with anger or frustration, and he showed our students that hard problems can be approached with craft, calm, and perseverance.

His impact will be felt far beyond the sets he helped build. It lives on in the students he mentored and in the way they will continue to approach work, collaboration, and adversity.

We are deeply grateful for all George has given to SFCC Drama and Spartan Theatre. Congratulations, George. We will miss you very much.

If you have photos of George working in the SFCC scene shop, or stories about what it meant to learn from him, work beside him, or know him through Spartan Theatre, we would love to see and hear them. Please share them in the comments or send them our way so we can help celebrate his extraordinary time with us.

One of the most joyful parts of preparing "The Love for Three Oranges" has been bringing the traditional commedia dell’arte masks to life.

Earlier this quarter, theatre artist Jeffrey St. George joined us for a series of special workshops with our students, introducing them to the history, movement, and character work behind these iconic masks. Jeffrey also digitally designed the masks used in our production.

From there, the process moved into the Spartan Theatre prop shop, where the masks were 3D printed and then transformed by our talented student props team. Nyla Hess, Triss Boik, and Megan Boyd carefully painted, textured, and collaged each mask to echo the look and feel of traditional hand-tooled leather commedia masks.
The result is a wonderful blend of old theatre traditions and new technology—and a great example of the hands-on creative work our students get to experience in the program.

Take a look at some photos from the process below, and then come see these characters come alive on stage!

Help Shape the Next Spartan Theatre Season!

Each year, the SFCC Spartan Theatre invites our community into the creative conversation about what stories we tell next. We’re currently gathering play and musical recommendations for our upcoming 59th season (Fall 2026-Spring 2027), and we’d love to hear your ideas.

This year, we’re especially seeking recommendations in three areas:

Fall: A classical or contemporary play that offers rich roles and meaningful design opportunities

Winter: A Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) piece that can engage schools, families, and first-time theatre-goers

Spring: A musical that challenges, excites, and supports interdisciplinary collaboration

Our Season Recommendation Committee, made up of students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members, reads and discusses submissions with student learning at the center. We look for work that offers a range of role types and design challenges, responds to the world around us, and opens doors for collaboration across campus and into the community.

This process isn’t just about picking titles, it’s about building a season that reflects curiosity, relevance, and care. The shows we produce become classrooms, laboratories, and community gathering spaces, shaped by all of the voices that help imagine them.

If there’s a play or musical you love, a piece that feels especially urgent, or a story you believe would resonate on our stage and in our community, we invite you to share it with us. Your recommendations help guide conversations and expand what’s possible for our students and audiences alike.

Thank you for being part of the ecosystem that keeps the Spartan Theatre growing!

Submit your recommendation(s) before March 1st here:

Bigfoot Drama Club was out supporting our friends, and many SFCC alumni, in Stage Left Theatre’s production of "Be More Chill."

It was a great night of theatre and an even better night of connecting and reconnecting with alumni, collaborators, and friends who continue to shape Spokane’s theatre community. Seeing our students in the audience alongside artists who once trained on the same stages is a wonderful full-circle moment.

A huge congratulations to the entire "Be More Chill" team at Stage Left for an electric start to their season. We’re grateful for strong local partnerships and for the chance to show our students what community-driven theatre looks like in action.
