Join us for a premiere staged reading performance of "The Great Semiramis" by Cristóbal de Virués (1550–1614), translated for the first time in English by Dr. Alec Schumacher and Dr. Kathleen Jeffs.
The Spanish Golden Age play, written c1580, portrays a legendary Assyrian queen as an ambitious, powerful, and ruthless ruler, charting her rise to power, sexual excesses, and ultimate violent downfall. The staged reading is directed by Charlie Pepiton and performed by members of the Square Top Theatre Laboratory Ensemble: Lani Call, Steve Lloyd, Matt Slater, and Elizabeth Spindler.
The event is a partnership between the Robert K. and Ann J. Powers Chair of the Humanities, Gonzaga University Dept. of Theatre & Dance and Gonzaga University Department of Modern Languages and Literature, and the Generalitat Valenciana Ministry of Education, Culture, and Universities in Spain.
The event is FREE. No RSVP required. Monday, April 27, 2026. 7:00pm in the Chancellor's Room at the Jundt Art Museum at Gonzaga University.
