Some people have a way of putting their whole heart into what they do, and Mery Noel Smith is one of them. 💛

As a poet, storyteller, and Spokane’s Poet Laureate, Mery uses words to make space for the messy, beautiful, complicated parts of being human. Her work touches on grief, healing, hope, and everything in between, with a whole lot of heart behind it.

But what makes Mery extra special is how she takes that love for poetry beyond the page, finding ways to bring people together and make art feel a little more accessible to everyone.

We’re pretty lucky to have people like Mery in our creative community. Get to know her a little better in this artist spotlight! ✨

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR FAVORITE SPREADSHEET QUEEN!!! 🎂✨

Today we’re celebrating Rachael Chambers, our events manager, resident organizational wizard, artist, textile lover, board game rule master, Tolkien scholar, stamp collector, and all-around incredible human.

If you were at Terrain 17, you probably saw the magic. What you maybe didn’t see was the absolute MACHINE behind it all. Rachael poured her heart, brain, time, and way too many checklists into making that night happen—and we genuinely don’t know what we’d do without her. 😂

She has this wild ability to take a million moving pieces, somehow make sense of all of them, and then make everyone around her feel like, “Yep! We got this!” And she does it all with so much care for the artists, volunteers, our team, and this wonderful community we get to be a part of.

So today, we hope you get to put down the spreadsheet and let everyone else take care of YOU for a change. 💛

ART IS FRIVOLOUS.

Or so they say.

On Friday night, y’all begged to differ.

What we witnessed was ferocious joy. People finding their voice. Their power. Their place in this city. New friends and old friends moving through the nooks and crannies of an old warehouse, stumbling across something beautiful, uncomfortable, hilarious, strange. Young people seeing someone who looks like them, thinks like them, or simply sees them for exactly who they are. Others being reminded of what a gift they are to this world.

A community lifting each other up. IRL. Shoulder to shoulder. And some damn good art to boot!

The absurd number of people it takes to make something like this happen does not go unnoticed. Artists brave enough to put their work into the world. Volunteers giving us their time. Jurors lending their expertise. Staff working their tails off. Community partners pitching in. Financial supporters writing checks. Media outlets spreading the word. And thousands upon thousands of you choosing to show up. So thank you, yet again, Spokane. Our hearts are incredibly full. 💜

Another First Friday is Here! And this one is stacked!

We’re opening the doors to CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE tonight. For this exhibition, the people who spend their days championing Spokane’s arts community are stepping into the spotlight as artists themselves. Museum and gallery directors, nonprofit founders, arts educators, advocates, and other local arts folks are bringing out the work they’ve been making behind the scenes.

WE ALL BUILD THIS shoutout to Ryan Patterson! 🫶

Ryan has been showing up for Terrain for years—and this month, she’s given us a lot of her days. Cleaning, prepping, painting, and doing behind-the-scenes work that helps turn an idea into something special.

Ryan believes we all have a hand in creating the city and community we want to live in, and she puts that belief into action. After experiencing her first Terrain at the Cracker Building, she’s been lending a hand ever since. She’s watched Spokane’s arts community grow and become more accessible over the years, and we’re pretty lucky she’s been helping build it with us along the way.

So this is us giving Ryan her flowers. 🌸 Thank you for your time, your energy, and all the days you’ve poured into Terrain 17. It truly takes all of us to build this thing.

Two ways to spend First Friday with Terrain! 🖼️ 🖌️

On October 2, you can catch the energy of Terrain 17, AND pop into the gallery for the opening of CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE.

So… why not do both?

CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE flips the script, bringing the people who champion art every day—museum and gallery directors, nonprofit founders, art teachers, and local arts advocates—into the spotlight as artists themselves.

Expect clay, mixed media sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography, and more, all shaped by people who have spent their lives immersed in Spokane’s arts community.

Organized by longtime artist, arts educator, and journalist Carrie Scozzaro, the show features work from arts leaders across Spokane and the Inland Northwest (full list below).

Come celebrate the people who keep our arts community moving—and the creative spark that keeps them making.

Local legend and wickedly talented artist Tif Ander Patterson is the genius behind this year's Terrain 17 poster design.

Ander has participated in almost every Terrain to date, and we're beyond thrilled to have their beautiful mind and distinctive style set the tone for this year's event.
