The sound that arose from the crowd gathered on Friday night at Barrister Winery is hard to describe. It was not so much a shout as a cry; a cry of amazement, of disbelief, of joy. It was a cry, too, of gratitude for the two hours of delightful and astonishing music-making that audience had enjoyed....

BachFest Celebrates J.S. Bach and Zuill Bailey

Ten years ago in March Zuill Bailey came to Spokane to perform Bach's Complete Suites for Unaccompanied Cello in a sold-out BachFest performance at St. John's Cathedral. It was one of life's moments of serendipity that led to Zuill being invited to succeed the retiring Gunther Schuller as BachFest Artistic Director.

Zuill is celebrating another anniversary this year also: the anniversary of his original chart-topping, landmark recording of the Complete Bach Suites with a 2021 Newly Recorded SACD release (Super Audio CD) of the Complete Suites. Think about that! Zuill Bailey playing Bach Suites in Surround Sound!! Watch for notice of a May release of this musical treasure. Teaser: The SACD cover art will come from Spokane.

Northwest BachFest may be the only regional music organization to present continuously throughout the pandemic's restrictions with well-received online Across The Miles concerts, Postcards From Spokane (seen by hundreds of thousands across the U.S. and Canada) plus a new series soon to be announced, all masterfully led by our Artistic Director.

Beautifully captured in Spokane in October 2020 by Hamilton Studio, Zuill Bailey's video performances for BachFest 2021 of the Suites for Unaccompanied Cello are both the cherry on top and the beating heart of Northwest BachFest.
