Richard Termes changed the art world with his invention of the Termesphere: a complete world captured on a sphere.

His art captures the world in a way no one else has, combining geometry, perspective, and creativity into mesmerizing works that have been celebrated in South Dakota and across the globe.

The Hermosa Library and the Hermosa Senior Citizens Meals are pleased to host this event with the world’s leading spherical artist. Mr. Termes will bring a sampling of his Termespheres and discuss his career and process on Tuesday, May 12, at 1 pm after the senior meals at the Hermosa American Legion. This event is sponsored by the South Dakota State Arts Council.

A new Termesphere is taking shape.

Dick Termes is currently working on a 30-inch sphere titled Rings of Time, created for the new visitor center in the Badlands of South Dakota. This piece draws directly from the experience of standing out there, where layers of earth wrap around you in every direction.

Still in progress, the sphere is beginning to reveal where the iconic Badlands formations emerge from the ring pattern he laid down as the foundation.

Dick Termes often sketches his ideas on smaller works. These eight-inch Termespheres act as a sketchbook, allowing him to work through concepts, patterns, and emerging forms without committing to a full-scale piece. These studies serve as a starting point. Some remain experiments, while others become the foundation for larger Termespheres.

This is the first in a series of small works Dick has chosen to share.

In this piece, he begins with loose color and pattern, applied without a fixed plan. Over time, figures and moments of realism emerge from within the abstraction. By allowing just enough refinement and restraint, subtle scenes and visual illusions reveal themselves the longer you look.
