Two Termespheres are hanging at the The Matthews in Spearfish again.

The centerpiece is "The Matthews Opera Sphere", the 30-inch Termesphere Dick Termes created specifically for the historic theater in 2008. The sphere depicts the Opera House itself while weaving figures and performances from its history into the scene. It had been taken down for an extended period while the building underwent repairs, and it is now back in place.

Joining it is "To Look at One Thing and See Another", a 24-inch Termesphere painted in 2002 and on loan from the Termesphere Gallery. The piece brings together a collection of optical illusions across the surface of the sphere, constantly shifting between what you think you see and what is actually there.

If you’re headed to the Matthews for a performance, gallery visit, or event, take a few extra minutes to take a look.

We loved seeing this.

SDPB recently visited Boxelder Job Corps, where students are using Dick Termes’ drawing lessons as part of their classroom experience.

Dick has spent decades exploring perspective, geometry and new ways of seeing the world, but one of the best parts of his work is seeing those ideas click for someone else.

One student described the lessons as giving them “a whole new perspective on drawing,” while another talked about getting completely absorbed in the process.

Dick Termes just finished his newest Termesphere: the Thomas Jefferson Reading Room at the Library of Congress in Washington DC.

The real room is built around a center point in the library which is an octagon with a dome at the top, and radiating desks on the floor circling out from where the librarian sits. Sculptures stand atop the columns representing all forms of knowledge from law and science to poetry, art and religion.

He chose it for America's 250th anniversary because, in his words: "That's the most important kind of thing that we can be proud of in America, our knowledge."

New Termesphere titled “Chained In.”
This 14-inch piece is painted using a structure derived from an icosahedron, a 20-sided geometric solid made entirely of triangles. Dick took those triangles and turned them into loops or chains, then wove them together over and under in a pattern that locks perfectly around a depiction of the earth.
Termes describes it like this: “So outside of us is this wonderful, beautiful universe of planets and stars and suns that we can’t get to. We’re held into the earth and lucky to even get to our own planets around us in our solar system.” GeometricArt Icosahedron NewWork

Beginning May 22, 2026, the Termesphere Gallery will be open daily throughout the summer from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Free admission.
