If you're building your Black Hills itinerary right now: Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse, Badlands, Wall Drug, you have the big ones covered. Here's a hidden gem you may not have heard about.
Just outside of Spearfish is a geodesic dome filled with painted spheres, called Termespheres. Each one reveals a complete 360 degree world as it slowly turns in front of you. Artist Dick Termes invented the technique himself, and spent the past 50+ years painting them. Nowhere else in the world has a collection like it.

You can even put on a VR headset and go inside the art!

The Termesphere Gallery has been featured in the New York Times, The Oprah Magazine, recently on Samantha Brown's Places to Love, and countless must-see and unique-stop travel lists. Add it to yours.
Termesphere Gallery. 1920 Christensen Drive, outside Spearfish, South Dakota. Free admission, open Mon.-Sat. 9 to 5. (Closed Sunday)

What does a Termesphere look like from the inside?

At the Termesphere Gallery, you can put on a VR headset and step directly into one of Dick Termes’ painted worlds. The artwork surrounds you completely: above, below, in front and behind.

This experience works because Termespheres are unlike any other body of art. Each was originally painted as a complete 360-degree environment using the six-point perspective system Dick invented. The VR program does not have to imagine what exists beyond the frame. There is no frame. The entire world is already contained on the sphere.

Decades before virtual reality headsets existed, Dick Termes was creating complete visual environments. Now you can see the original spheres rotating in the gallery, then step inside the art yourself.

Dick Termes uses these 8 inch spheres to "sketch out" his ideas before they make the leap to a ligit Termesphere. This process gives him the freedom to test new ideas before committing months of work to a larger piece. Each one is a complete, finished artwork and a fascinating glimpse into the creative process of one how Dick's mind works.

Stop by the Termesphere Gallery and see the small spheres that often inspire the next big idea.

New Termesphere titled “Chained In.”
This 14-inch piece is painted using a structure derived from an icosahedron, a 20-sided geometric solid made entirely of triangles. Dick took those triangles and turned them into loops or chains, then wove them together over and under in a pattern that locks perfectly around a depiction of the earth.
Termes describes it like this: “So outside of us is this wonderful, beautiful universe of planets and stars and suns that we can’t get to. We’re held into the earth and lucky to even get to our own planets around us in our solar system.” GeometricArt Icosahedron NewWork
