Butte/Lawrence County Fair
At a meeting held in Nisland on Monday April 5, 1920, the question of a county agriculture fair was discussed. It was suggested that to make an agriculture fair a success and to exhibit, necessary plans should be formulated at once. Various crops for exhibit purposes should be selected at once to be planted in season.
County commissioners were asked to appropriate seven thousand five hundred dollars ($7500) for necessary improvements of the fairgrounds and for holding the fair in 1921. September 28,1920, Butte County purchased 40 acres of land on the Belle Fourche River west of Nisland, from Albert M Willard and Roy F. McNeil for the Butte County Fairgrounds.
In August, 1921, Earl Wilson was given a contract for constructing the buildings. He moved onto the grounds, camped there and immediately began putting in concrete foundations. The fair continued for many years seeing many Home and County Agents over the years.
In 1979 the Lawrence County commissioners asked to join with Butte County to host one-two County Fair.
