Ideas about this work before completed:

(Think about the materiality and continuous image of the film shifting as we move thru space rather than the film moving in time)

This series of paintings starts with body forms painted across a continuous surface before tearing the work into strips and synthesizing them into panels that line the walls. The process of physical destruction and reconstruction mirrors how film editing condenses and sequences individual frames into a visual continuum . The torn strips become compressed into a new form, transforming the expansive painted environment into a condensed, cinematic whole. Individual paintings can be taken out of this environment, but they will always be connected to the whole.

I call each panel a “scene” and plan to adorn them singularly with appendages and bulging frames later

🌟✨ I’m thrilled to share some images from the recent exhibition “Fall Out” at Milliken Art Gallery, Converse University.

A huge thank you to for curating the show and hosting my work. It was really great to connect with so many interested students and faculty who had such thoughtful questions. Thank you for a wonderful reception and so glad we could squeak in a trip and talk between the school closings and crazy weather! 🙏❤️

I also want to give a shout out to for making the trip down to join us. Can’t wait to hang out again!🚀🌈

Lastly, I’m incredibly grateful for the continued friendship and support from Katharine and Rebecca It’s always fabulous to reconnect in person, and I’m so thankful you made the journey down for the artist reception and talk!

Here’s to art, community, and the amazing connections we make along the way! 🎉🥳

Some final images of pieces in Fall Out, currently up

“About 20 years ago, I began painting directly on un-stretched raw canvas. I think this directness with the canvas, though still acting as the support to the paint, made me approach everything differently. The canvasses’ inherent materiality could not be ignored. I began experimenting in different ways of how one makes a painting. I wanted to highlight the support, and prioritizing the cotton fabric became my focus. I started folding and manipulating the canvas in various ways. This experimentation resulted in an excess of painted canvas. Both out of frustration, and out of limited resources, I started tearing up my paintings. Weaving the colorful strips was the next move. I liked the idea that the paintings held gestures of both destruction and care.”

Fall Out will run from January 8-29, 2026. Frater will present a Gallery Talk at the Closing Reception (https://www.converse.edu/event/gallery-talk-closing-reception-fall-out-new-work-by-jean-alexander-frater/) on January 29, 2026, at 6 PM in the gallery followed by a reception from 6:30-8:00 PM.
