Meet the Artist⤵️
Mills Brown is a visual artist based in Oxford, UK. Mills works with painting, drawing and animation to explore themes of memory, safety and family. Originally from South Carolina, Mills embraces a Southern Gothic sensibility where the supernatural exists alongside the mundane. She is interested in ordinary moments of domestic life and family stories that refuse to settle neatly into the past. Recent work explores new parenthood, illustrating quiet scenes of shared wonder and protectiveness. Mills holds an MFA in Studio Art from American University and a BA in English and Art History from Wofford College. Mills has exhibited in Oxford, London, Washington, Charleston and Lake City. She works at Modern Art Oxford to design participatory opportunities for families to play and create through engagement with contemporary art.

Rebecca Forstater’s {Training_camp} examines the creation of public memory in the current AI-fueled rat race through the lens of pop-culture history. The works from Version 2.0 displayed in this exhibition focus on photographed moments of crisis involving female celebrities in the early 2000s that circulated widely as entertainment through early digital media. Forstater utilizes the materiality of emerging AI software to create these works, asking the training models to contextualize the past given the algorithm’s present pool of data. The results, imagery deeply rooted in social and cultural narratives surrounding gender, serve as a case study of biased ideologies embedded in our digital social consciousness. The objects and videos visualize peculiar amalgamations, attempting to reverse the uncomfortable, revealing fleeting instances of progress entangled with societal mistakes, and shapeshifting into new iterations.

Rebecca Forstater (she/they) is a South Carolina–based interdisciplinary artist who received her MFA from Syracuse University and her BFA from James Madison University. Their work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, with recent shows at ArtFields (South Carolina), The Hangaram Design Museum (Seoul), and Future Fair (New York City). She has been an artist in residence on Governors Island (New York) and at the Haubrok Foundation (Berlin). Forstater currently serves as Assistant Professor of Studio Art at Wofford College, is on the board of the New Media Caucus, and is a member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid GVL.
