From our original MCC~

We hear it all the time...
"I really should do the tour."

And our response is always the same: Yes, you should.

Not only is this beautiful Historic District preserved in such a way that we can truly experience what it was like to live, work, worship, and play in the days of the early Moravians, but it's also one of the prettiest and most peaceful places you'll find.

While Old Salem Museum & Gardens is a favorite destination for school field trips throughout the year, summer brings a wonderful opportunity for adults and families to explore at a more relaxed pace. With school out, the tours are easier than ever to enjoy.

And here's a tip: Plan a weekday visit. Saturdays feature lots of special programs, demonstrations, and events, but they're also the busiest days. A weekday stroll through the district offers a quieter experience, giving you more time to soak in the gardens, workshops, historic buildings, and stories that make Old Salem such a special place.
And of course, no visit is complete without lunch at the Muddy Creek Cafe. After a morning of exploring, enjoy a sandwich, salad, beer or wine, on the patio, and take in the beauty of a place where history still feels very much alive.

Happy summer exploring! 🌞

The Justins are on the Muddy Creek Music Hall stage tonight, and meanwhile, our beloved Mediterranean Plate has officially headed South.

We've taken all the light, flavorful goodness of the classic platter we've served for years and given it a Southern spin.

It was a throwback evening. Not a single photo was taken. We weren't there for social media. We were there for each other.

The ages in the room ranged from folks in their 70s who remember life well before the internet, to a 16-year-old who has never known a world without it.

We also had two ghosts.

Ghost Bonnie, who somehow became Bad Bonnie, and then eventually Bad Bunny. Bonnie had passed her ticket along to Kim, who shared it with Von, who actually showed up. The other ghost? Well... let's just say we'll keep that name to ourselves. It was still Bunco, after all.

The snacks came courtesy of the Summer Collection at Trader Joe's. Lime Shortbread Cookies, Lime Graham Crackers, plus Muddy Creek Pimento Cheese, and a collection of seasonal treats that disappeared surprisingly quickly.

Prizes included freshly baked Blueberry Sourdough from Little Seed Bakery, lotions and goodies from Touch of Grace, and hand-blended organic teas.

And of course, as always, the competition got real.

Especially toward the end of the night.

This month's crowd had decided that every Bunco deserved a dance. A full get-up-out-of-your-seat-and-move kind of dance. And let me tell you, it happened.

Picture this: the last round of the night. Triple sixes needed for the win. All eyes on the next roller. Would it be a Bunco?

That bunco roller happened to be the youngest and quietest member of the group. Probably wondering what she'd gotten herself into with a room full of women having the time of their lives without a phone in sight.

So she did what any impressionable young woman might do in that moment.

She stood up and danced.

And the crowd went wild.

We cheered. We hollered. We danced right along with her.

And for one Wednesday evening, gathered around a centuries-old game of chance and luck, we found ourselves in a very special place indeed. We found ourselves in joy.☺️

Ha! Yes, this is us. Billy, with his determined vision coming to life, along with Shana’s infectious enthusiasm, fueling the inner fire shared between them…

This photo was taken at the Muddy Creek Music Hall on June 17, 2019, just two days before our very first concert. I'm sure the tables and chairs were stashed in a corner somewhere. The sound system was probably still sitting in boxes. The speakers? Hopefully not covered in dust. And I distinctly remember being ankle-deep (or maybe knee-deep) in sawdust because the Green Room had become wood-cutting central.

We weren't worried about everything being perfect. We just wanted to get the doors open.

In fact, it wouldn't be until the COVID year that we truly upgraded the space, and then a few years later we made major improvements to the sound system. But back then, we were simply excited to welcome people in.

Our first big event was the Alleghany Arts Council's Backwoods Beat Festival, headlined by Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Matraca Berg of "Strawberry Wine" fame. Shortly after came Mary Gauthier. It was a fabulous way to launch the festival and a joyful time was had by all.

Now, years later, this room has hosted Bunco nights, private parties, local civic organizations, a few years with a local church, and of course, hundreds of live music performances. The stage that once sat surrounded by construction dust now comes alive on weekend nights with local rock bands, touring artists, bluegrass pickers, singer-songwriters, and friends gathering together to enjoy it all.

I hope you'll check out some of our upcoming events and make plans to visit. The room is more wonderful than ever, the talent is still top-notch, and we're grateful every day for the community that has helped make it all possible. ☺️

What if Wednesday really was Anything Can Happen Day?🌟

The sunshine is shining, the mountain breeze is blowing, and Wednesday nights in Sparta are proving that a little fun goes a long way.

On Wednesday, June 17, it's Bunco Night at the Muddy Creek Cafe! New friends, prizes, snacks, laughter, and just enough friendly competition to keep things interesting. Whether you're a seasoned Bunco player or have never rolled a die in your life, you'll fit right in. 🎲

And because every good Wednesday deserves good food, our hand-breaded Springer Mountain Chicken Tenders are just $12. A local favorite for a reason. 🐔

Then on Wednesday, June 24, the excitement continues with Alleghany Rotary Trivia Night. Gather your smartest friends (or at least the ones who know a little bit about everything) and prepare for an evening of fun competition. There will be laughs, high-fives, surprising answers, and the occasional dramatic sigh when your team was so close to getting it right. 🏆

These opportunities for fun and connection don't happen by accident. They're made possible by local organizations, volunteers, and businesses committed to building a stronger community. And every person who attends helps make them successful.

So buy a Bunco ticket. Gather a Trivia team. Order the chicken tenders.

Most importantly, come have some fun.

Because sometimes the best thing that happens all week starts on a Wednesday.

Cheers!

From our original location in Winston-Salem~ Southern, Moravian, festive and vibrant. And we can do this here in Sparta, too. ☺️

We’ve been told we have the prettiest patio in Winston-Salem, and we don’t mind saying—we kind of agree.

Tucked away on Main Street in Old Salem, right across from Salem Square, our patio is a hidden gem. It’s the perfect spot for lunch, whether you’re touring the Historic District or simply looking for a local lunch spot with easy parking.

But here’s the real magic: after-hours private parties.

Simple, rustic, and full of Moravian and Southern flavor, Muddy Creek Cafe in Old Salem is a beautiful setting for gathering.

Dinner parties feature classic Moravian Chicken Pie Dinners with Three Sisters Appalachian Casserole. Late afternoon soirées lean into Southern favorites with our signature Roasted Red Pepper & Sweet Potato Hummus, Black-Eyed Pea Dip, local Ashe County cheeses, pickled okra, and pimento cheese—our very own Caviar of the South.

From birthdays and retirement parties to engagement celebrations and rehearsal dinners, we have the perfect spot for your next gathering.

Cheers! 🥂
