Big news! Tom Gordon has passed the torch of the Imirage Sound Lab Recording Arts Workshop to Mike Jenkins! After a 5 year hiatus we all agreed that this class needed to come back and Mike was ready to run with it! 16 weeks of good ol' audio learning from one of my top Jedi! Contact Mike to get a seat!
On Tuesday, September 10th, the Imirage Recording Arts Workshop is finally returning! This 16-week course will cover how to professionally record and mix a live band as well as the audio engineering best practices and knowledge that’ll help you no matter what style of music you make, including getting to work with real vintage analog equipment! It’ll run on Tuesday nights from 7pm to about 10 PM for the first five weeks and about 11 PM for the last eleven weeks. Check out our scope and sequence for the class below!
The class's cost is based on the number of students. Our minimum is four students, and with four students the cost is $800 each. If we can get 6 students, it goes down to $750 each. If we can reach our maximum of eight students, the cost goes down to $600 each! So, please forward this to anyone who might be interested. We only have spots for 8 students max, and they fill up fast. A $100 deposit holds your seat in the class, and all payments are non-refundable. Please reach out to [email protected] for further details or to reserve your spot!
The class is divided into 3 sections or "cells."
Cell 1:
5 weeks of information covering:
-The history of recording and how it relates to your studio
-The foundations of acoustics, to maximize your studio space
-Analog vs. digital recording and media
-Console design and signal flow, or how to emulate a console in the box
-Microphone design and application, and how to build your best mic locker
Cell 2:
-5 weeks of hands-on tracking with a band, including:
-How to set up your DAW and equipment, or how organize your session to make sure your recording sessions get the best results with the least wasted time
-Micing common rock band instruments, including drums, bass, guitar, and vocals.
-How to give your artists the best headphone mixes
Cell 3:
-6 weeks of hands-on mixing where you mix what you tracked in the last cell. Covering:
-Editing
-Pitch correction
-Panning
-Noise gates and expanders
-Compression and de-essing
-Equalization
-Reverb and delays
On the last night we’ll master your mixes and give you an overview of how to prep your tracks for release on streaming, CD, and vinyl.
Also, on the final night film and television expert Ray Silva will come in to demonstrate techniques for sound for film and video, including a hands-on one-camera shoot with actors!
Every class starts with a listening in our acoustically treated environment. We listen to a curated series of songs as a class to identify every instrument in the track and its relative volume to help develop critical listening skills that’ll help you in all aspects of producing music. See you there!
Huge shoutouts to Tom Gordon and Imirage Sound Lab for bringing back this fantastic class!
