Part 2 is finally here. 😅

I said I was posting this like two weeks ago, but our whole family got sick and then I kept re-editing the video trying to make it less boring. Just fast forward through it lol

One thing we’ve changed since losing those chickens is that we only free range now while we’re outside working or doing evening chores. They go in at dusk and get closed up before we head inside for the night.

Homesteading has been a huge learning curve for us. My heart genuinely breaks for the chickens we lost to our own naivety. We’re new to this life, and there’s a lot you just don’t know until you live it.

I know the fox is doing what foxes do. At the same time, these animals are still our responsibility to protect, and that’s part of raising livestock that people don’t always see. I’m not willing to keep my chickens locked up 24/7 any more than I’d keep my dog inside his whole life just because there are risks outside.

It’s all a learning process over here, and if sharing this helps another new homesteader avoid learning this lesson the hard way, then that’s a win. We assume we’re safe from predators just because we haven’t seen one yet. ❤️

Just a little reminder that today is our last open day for a bit 🤍

I wanted to say it again in case you missed it. We’re taking a short pause while Brian is away and we have a bit more fidelity on what the year will look like.

Unfortunately, our rooster numbers have slowly dwindled over the past year as they’ve each started to attack Noah. There’s a certain charm that a four year-old has that really brings out the aggression in roosters. It should really be studied.

So off we go to The Poultry House to get some chicks to hopefully get some good roosters from. We could always get a rooster from another flock, but we had a respiratory illness in half of our chickens a while ago that turned out to be nothing. But, it scared us enough that we will certainly be careful adding any unknown chickens to our flock.

Our main flock has one rooster left, so I’m sure he’ll appreciate the back up when these ones are old enough!

THE FINAL 2 WEEKENDS! ‼️🍞

These next two weekends will be the final weekends the farm stand will be open before we pause for a while.

If you didn’t know, we’re a military family. Brian’s schedule has become a bit more unpredictable lately. He will be gone for all of April, and he may deploy not long after that.

Running the homestead, raising our family, and operating the farm stand is something we’ve always done together, and with him gone it’s just not something I can realistically manage on my own right now.

Rather than opening and closing depending on his schedule, I’ve decided the best thing to do is pause the farm stand until further notice. This includes deliveries (eggs will always be available through pickup).

I truly love running this little stand and I’m so grateful for every single person who stops by and supports our homestead. It means more to our family than you know. 🤍

So if you’ve been meaning to stop by, these next two weekends are your chance before we take a break.
