END DAYS

A comedy by
Deborah Zoe Laufer

END DAYS is a rapturously funny play you won’t want to miss, especially if you enjoy a little thought-challenge to go along with your theatre fix.

Sixteen-year-old Rachel Stein is having a bad year. Her father hasn’t changed out of his pajamas since 9/11. Her mother has begun a close, personal relationship with Jesus, convinced the Apocalypse is coming…on Wednesday. Left behind by both, Rachel shields herself with sarcasm and black eyeliner.

Into this volatile mix steps Nelson, a relentlessly optimistic, science-obsessed classmate who idolizes Stephen Hawking, has a crush on Rachel and dresses as Elvis. Through him – and imagined appearances of Jesus and Hawking – the Steins confront the gulf between science and faith, certainty and doubt, fear and hope.

For those interested in a deeper dive into the themes explored by this play, here is an interview with the author, from NPR’s “Science Friday"

END DAYS
A comedy by Deborah Zoe Laufer

End Days is a touching comedy that examines science, faith, and the search for meaning following personal loss. Deborah Zoe Laufer places a grieving family at the crossroads of two worldviews: the analytics of science and the comfort of faith. After 9/11, Arthur Stein has lost his bearings, retreating into silence and despair. His wife Sylvia, desperate for meaning, embraces evangelical Christianity with fervor, convinced the Apocalypse is coming…on Wednesday. Their daughter Rachel, left behind by both, shields herself with sarcasm and black eyeliner.

Into this volatile mix steps Nelson, a relentlessly optimistic, science-obsessed classmate who has a crush on Rachel and dresses as Elvis. As Wednesday approaches, the Steins confront the possibility — with unexpected help from imagined versions of Jesus and Stephen Hawking— that science and faith may not be enemies so much as different languages for the same human longing to understand the universe and our place in it. Blending humor, heartbreak, and a touch of the surreal, End Days suggests that human connection may be the bridge between belief and reason, despair and renewal.

End Days follows the Stein family, each of whom is spiraling in their own way after 9/11. Sixteen year old Rachel Stein is a cynical, goth outsider whose father, Arthur, has sunk into deep depression and barely leaves his pajamas. Her mother, Sylvia, has abruptly embraced evangelical Christianity and believes the Apocalypse is coming…on Wednesday.

Into this chaos arrives Nelson, the sweet, science obsessed new neighbor who dresses like Elvis and is determined to win over Rachel. As the supposed end approaches, the family is forced to confront their grief, their fears, and each other — with unexpected help from imagined versions of Jesus and Stephen Hawking.

The play blends humor, heart, and existential questions as the Steins stumble toward connection and healing.

Characters:

- Rachel Stein – 16 year-old nihilistic goth. Feels angry & orphaned since 9/11, as both of her parents have withdrawn into their own worlds.

- Sylvia Stein – Rachel’s mother (late 30s - early 50s). Newly Evangelical with a close, personal relationship with Jesus.

- Arthur Stein - Rachel’s father (late 30s - 50s). Deeply depressed, finding his way.

- Nelson Steinberg – Their new neighbor, also 16 years old. Passionate about science, dresses as Elvis, loves Rachel.

- Jesus and Stephen Hawking – Played by the same actor.

IN MEMORIAM

Rosina Whitfield
Brunswick Little Theatre Board of Directors
2023-2026

BLT Board Member Rosina Whitfield passed away at her home on March 20, 2026. She was a dynamic, effervescent and adventurous soul who touched many lives in the arts world. She was especially fond of children’s theatre reminding everyone that she became hooked on drama in the first grade when she played the role of “Aunt Bear”. Theatre was her passion as seen by

her professional career roles ranging from Artistic and Drama Director to Youth Theatre Director to Developer of Educational
Programs. Rosina also taught Acting at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland for 10 years and ran her own professional theatre company

Rosina’s final BLT production, One Slight Hitch, was performed February 19 – March 8th. The February 26th online performance review called the “door-slamming stage farce….an enjoyable ride.” Although struggling with flu-like symptoms, as recently as this past weekend, Rosina directed and attended a performance at South Brunswick High where she worked as supervisor of the drama club.

Rosina leaves behind her spouse Dan Whitfield, son Skyler Whitfield and grandson Wyatt Whitfield. Donations in her name may be sent to the Oak Island Beach Preservation Society. https://beachoki.org/

"As we bid farewell to Rosina, let us carry forward the love and laughter she brought into our world.”
