🚨 Beach alert: Tagged horseshoe crabs will be crawling onto New York shores this weekend as peak spawning season arrives.

As temperatures warm, our beaches become a key site for one of Earth’s oldest living species. Horseshoe crabs come ashore to spawn, especially during evening high tides around full and new moons. You can also spot them in the shallows or along the shoreline during the day.

Some carry small button tags as part of research on their movements, site fidelity, and survival. Finding one counts as a valuable recapture! Tags may appear worn, discolored, or covered in algae, so check shells carefully.

Quick tip: Horseshoe crabs are harmless and don’t sting or bite. Their tail helps them right themselves if overturned. If one needs help, gently hold the sides of the shell—never the tail—and place it facing the water.

THESE ARE THE LATEST CREATIONS

Each of my horseshoe crab pieces begins with a real, naturally shed horseshoe crab molt.
A relic of the sea that tells a story millions of years in the making. The larger ones are actually shells of deceased horseshoe crabs, and are a bit heavier, but I assure you no horseshoe crabs were harmed for my artwork.

I pick them up on the beaches of the North Fork of Long Island and hand-clean, dry, prime and transform each one into a unique work of coastal art. Most are pour painted, and a few are decoupaged.
All are sealed with a spray gloss sealer and ready to hang. The undersides are only primed white, and have a wire across them so that they can easily be hung on a nail or a picture hook.

No two crabs are ever the same. The curves, the colors, and glimmer of gloss, highlights the crab’s natural details, turning these ancient creatures into one-of-a-kind wall art perfect for any beach house, nautical décor, or ocean lover’s collection.
