Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings Celebrating over 40 years of extraordinary chamber music concerts throughout southeast Michigan

Since its founding in 1982, Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings (DCWS) has set the standard for chamber music in Detroit. By bringing together the top musicians from the metro area, most of whom are members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Michigan Opera Theatre.

This Sunday, join Michigan State University College of Music faculty members Johanna Yarbrough, Kenneth Thompkins, and Zhihua Tang for a moving program featuring themes of migration, resistance, and liberation and the premiere of a new work by Brian Raphael Nabors. Located at the Mariners' Church of Detroit, this program commemorates the church's history and role as part of the Underground Railroad.

Some of our Palmer Park stars never stepped on stage.

From welcoming guests and directing parking to handing out hats, staffing activities, answering questions and making sure the day ran smoothly, our DCWS staff and volunteers were everywhere.

Outdoor events have a LOT of moving pieces, and this crew showed up ready to do whatever was needed—with plenty of smiles along the way.

To everyone who gave their time, energy and enthusiasm to help us welcome our community to Palmer Park: thank you. We truly couldn’t do it without you.

A celebration like Palmer Park doesn’t happen without an incredible community behind it.

Our heartfelt thanks to concert sponsors Kate & Randy Safford and Cheryl & Reuben Munday for helping make this special afternoon possible.

This performance was also generously supported by the Music Performance Trust Fund; Detroit Federation of Musicians, Local 5 of the American Federation of Musicians; Michigan Arts and Culture Council; and National Endowment for the Arts.

And a huge thank you to People for Palmer Park and The City of Detroit Parks & Recreation for welcoming us to this beautiful Detroit gathering place and helping us bring music to the Palmer Park community.

We are also grateful to all of the community organizations who joined us for the afternoon. 45 Years & Flourishing is about celebrating the community that has grown around DCWS—and Sunday was a wonderful example of exactly that.

What a way to begin our 45th season!

More than 30 musicians filled the Palmer Park Bandshell for our largest DCWS performance to date—and we are so grateful to every artist who helped make the afternoon unforgettable.

A special thank you to guest conductor Damien Crutcher for leading this incredible ensemble, and to our featured soloists Timothy McAllister, saxophone, and Kenneth Thompkins, trombone, for sharing their extraordinary artistry with us.

From Holst and Sousa to Motown and contemporary works, you brought 45 Years & Flourishing to life in spectacular fashion.

JazzEd Detroit brings together five organizations providing jazz education programs to network, organize, and work together in collective ways that serve young people in learning jazz. ArtOps continues to lead the JazzEd Detroit initiative, helping to preserve Detroit’s collaborative tradition of mentorship in the art form.

We are proud to support this important cultural tradition with two grants totaling $181,000 to Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings to support ArtOps in leading the JazzEd Detroit initiative and to support the Carr Center’s Gathering Orchestra program.
