“The Breath of Life” Oil on canvas, 36”x 48”
This post basically serves as a devotional about the breath of life during the creation of Adam. I’ll share a brief summary here of the symbolism and the overall goal of this artwork, but I go more in depth in the photos on this post.
God (the figure on the left) is descending from the heavens to create the first human Adam (on the right). The DNA symbolism serves as not only a reference to Jacob’s ladder in the Bible, but also God’s desire to be so close to His creation that He intertwined Himself with him.
God’s wing on the left is also in the shape of a human lung, the overflow of the breath of life is in the shape of a brain with neurons firing inside it, and the overall shape is the shape of a human heart with the aorta being the large red artery.
One of the goals of the anatomy symbolism is to communicate that God did not intend for His creation to only understand Him logically, but also physically, emotionally, and instinctually through all of our bodily senses.
The DNA symbolism also serves as a reminder for us that our true identity has been given to us by God at the moment of our being created, because the world, our jobs, our friends, and sometimes even our family can make us forget our true identity as children of God.
Thank you for reading this, if you feel so inclined to answer any of the journal prompts towards the end of this post, feel free to share them in the comments. I’d love to hear your answers!
