Happy World Photography Day!
What better place to celebrate than Dimbola, the former home and workplace of one of photography’s great pioneers, Julia Margaret Cameron?
When Mrs Cameron first picked up a camera in her late 40s, photography was still a relatively new medium. She soon developed a distinctive style of her own — creating atmospheric portraits with soft focus, dramatic lighting and an extraordinary sense of character.
Her photographs weren’t simply records of what someone looked like. Mrs Cameron wanted to capture something of the person behind the face. Her friends, family, artists, writers and neighbours became the subjects of photographs that are still admired around the world today.
This World Photography Day, come and discover the woman who helped photography become an art form — right here at Dimbola. ❤️
