Get ready to show your festival spirit!

Festival T-shirts and hats go on sale tomorrow at Wild Birds Unlimited in Southaven for $25 each. Proceeds help support the June Wheeler Memorial Hummingbird Garden and promote the North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival.

Wear your festival shirt or hat to the festival September 12 and 13 to enter our special prize drawings. You must be wearing your shirt or hat to receive the QR code. It will be available at the BirdReel™ tent, the Wild Birds Unlimited tent and inside Snowden House during the Speaker Symposium. Our North Mississippi Hummingbird Foundation “Friends Don’t Let Friends Serve Red Nectar” shirt also qualifies.

We will have multiple drawings for prizes, including a BirdReel™ smart hummingbird feeder, a complete bird-feeding pole system, several different hummingbird feeders and other great prizes. Winners will be drawn and contacted after the festival closes on Sunday, September 13.

Shirts and hats will also be available for purchase during the festival.

Happy National Hummingbird Day!

Today we celebrate the beauty and wonder hummingbirds bring to our gardens and the importance of protecting the habitats they depend on. Planting native flowers and keeping feeders clean and filled with fresh nectar are simple ways we can help.

The celebration continues next weekend at the North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival, September 12 and 13, on the grounds of the historic Snowden House and at the June Wheeler Memorial Hummingbird Garden in Southaven. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!🐦

Be part of the North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival!

We are looking for volunteers to help with check-in and in several areas throughout the festival on September 12 and 13. Whether you can give a few hours or spend the day with us, we would love to have your help.

Students who need community service hours are welcome to volunteer, and we will be happy to provide documentation of their completed hours.

Every volunteer will receive a festival T-shirt, and lunch will be provided for those volunteering during lunchtime.

We’re excited to welcome Ben Winborn, cofounder of Memphis Mushroom Foragers, to the North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival!

Ben has spent the past eight years studying mushrooms and seven years foraging them. Through that experience, he has developed extensive knowledge of mushroom identification, cultivation and foraging. He has a particular interest in the potential health benefits of mushrooms and the positive role they can play in overall wellness.

Ben cofounded Memphis Mushroom Foragers with his friend and foraging mentor, Kevin Lewis. More than anything, he enjoys teaching others and sharing his appreciation for the fascinating world of fungi.

Join Ben for “Foraging for Health” on Sunday, September 13, at 4:00 p.m. inside the Snowden House. Whether you are already interested in mushrooms or simply curious to learn more, this will be a great introduction to fungi and foraging.

We’re excited to welcome the CK Performance Team to the North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival!

The dancers, ages 4 to 18, will perform on the grounds of the Snowden House at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 12. They will open with “The Dance of the Butterfly,” followed by their traditional routines.

We love bringing the arts and nature together, and this special performance will be a beautiful addition to the festival.🐦🦋🐦

“Oh Look, There’s a Bird!”

Thomas with Wild Birds Unlimited and Habitat Harry will lead a fun, kid-friendly bird talk and nature walk through the festival grounds. Children will learn how to slow down, listen and look for the birds and other wildlife all around them.

Sunday is Family Day at the North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival!

Bring the family for a full day of fun, nature and education, including:

• Help Ruby Find Her Friends children’s scavenger hunt from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• “Oh Look, There’s a Bird!” Kids Bird Talk and Nature Walk at noon
• Old-fashioned cake walk from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
• Free face painting and children’s crafts from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
• Dunking booth from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. benefiting Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation
• Guided tours of the June Wheeler Memorial Hummingbird Garden

While the family activities are underway, our speaker symposium will continue inside Snowden House, with vendors and food trucks available throughout the festival grounds.

We’re excited to welcome Mary Schmidt to the North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival Speaker Symposium for her presentation, “Ruby-throated Hummingbirds: Natural History, Ecology, and Backyard Conservation”!

Mary is the Senior Conservationist for Regenerative Initiatives at The Works, Inc. in Memphis, where she leads conservation efforts across five counties in West Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Her background is in biodiversity and wildlife management, with a focus on interpreting native plants and animals.

A lifelong nature enthusiast and birdwatcher, Mary developed her love for wildlife while exploring the creeks and woods near her childhood home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

We are excited to welcome Jan Carnall and friends, talented plein air painters from across Mississippi and the Mid-South, to this year’s North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival!

This will be Jan’s second year joining us, and the artwork she created last year in the June Wheeler Memorial Hummingbird Garden was absolutely beautiful.

“Plein air” is a French term meaning “open air.” Plein air artists paint outdoors, capturing the natural light, colors, and beauty of the landscape as they experience it.

Our festival celebrates nature in many ways, and art is an important part of that experience. The artists will be painting on the grounds of the historic Snowden House and throughout the garden both Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to noon and again from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

They will begin before the festival opens to capture the changing morning light, so feel free to stop by early. Watch the scenes come to life and shop original artwork available for purchase right off the artists’ easels.
