Joetographs Joe's Photography. My name is Joe McClure, and I've lived on Cape Cod for 26 years. I am a Cape Cod photographer.

I tend to work in a lyric documentary form when shooting landscapes or individuals. My idea of a great portrait is taken out in the world that shows the subject in their natural element. The same holds true for architectural and landscape photography. It is about telling a story of what was, but not forgetting *how* it was.

Today I got to see Invisible Threads: Portraits and Stories of Our Global Neighbors at the Cahoon Museum — Julia Cumes and Lipe Lipe Borges collaborative project built around portraits, first-person stories, identity, belonging, migration, resilience, and home.

What struck me most is how much care there is in the collaboration. These aren’t just photographs of people; the subjects had a voice in how they were represented — location, clothing, objects, gesture, light. That changes everything.

And, unexpectedly, I also wound up taking the group photo of the artists and subjects. A pretty nice reminder that photography becomes a lot more interesting when it stops happening in a vacuum and starts becoming part of a community.

I went up a road I've never been on. At tje fork, signs said:

No right turn.
Residents Only

So, I made a left and continued slowly down the unpaved road. I passed a pair of women walking down the way, and i was anxious that they might tell me I wasn't allowed to be there. They paid me no mind, of course.

I continued on and found a whole section of trees killed by exposure to the increasing proximity to the salt spray of the ocean. I pulled over for this. When I got back into the car, I saw the women had almost caught up to me.

Where the road ended was a confluence of driveways. I thought one open space was just an opening, but I soon realized I was blocking a driveway. I decided that this late in the year, the house was likely unoccupied, and I saw no car. I grabbed a couple quick shots.

The women had caught up to me by now, and I could see they were looking at what I was doing. It was time to connect or leave...

The sky was blue that day. It showed the spire as it was meant to be seen: a warning. Still, mankind has ignored the warning over and over. Sarajevo, Ukraine, Gaza...when does mankind figure it out? The photo chooses the photographer sometimes, maybe most times.
