Gregory’s artistic process changes radically with the medium. Monotype is immediate, physical, and open-ended, allowing him to make quick changes directly on the plexiglas plate before committing an image to paper. Plein air painting is an exercise in bringing order to the visual chaos of the world outside, while still life offers its opposite: carefully controlled light, deliberate arrangements, and slow decisions. For Gregory, the medium is often the beginning of the work, shaping not only how an image is made but how it is seen.
His approach to making art is similarly direct. “Jump right in, like a cold ocean swim,” he says. When uncertainty or creative blocks arise, he simply moves to another piece. Working on several paintings at once allows ideas to develop at different speeds and keeps the process active and responsive.
