Dear Family, Friends and Flamencos . . .
I am reposting this notice from our mailing list for those who are no longer on that list.
I have some difficult news to share.
On October 7th, 2023, my wife, your friend, sister, colleague and teacher, Katerina Tomas suffered a large stroke which took away her ability to use her left arm and leg and severely affected her ability to speak. Although it has been close to a year since this happened, she has yet to regain these abilities and is unlikely to do so in the foreseeable future.
Katerina has been home since February, where I take care of her along with the help of home health aides who are with us eight hours a day.
Needless to say, this has been a very difficult time, but it has not been without joy. Katerina, after all, is still Katerina - capable of love and joy and all the things that have moved and motivated her all her life. She still has a strong aesthetic sense and enjoys listening to flamenco and classical music. She misses being able to dance and to teach dance.
I hope you’ll forgive me for taking so long to share this news. I’ve been so focused on her care and recovery that I’ve been slow to let people beyond our immediate family know what’s going on.
If you would like to see Katerina, please feel free to visit us at home here in Monrovia. Katerina loves company and familiar faces and would enjoy seeing you. Just text me at (626) 403-7489 and we'll set something up.
If you would like to contribute to Katerina’s care, you can donate to us via via Venmo -Flamenco. Our expenses have tripled since October. If you've had to care for a loved one, you'll know that the costs are never ending.
Thank you for your love and best wishes.
Abrazos,
Stephen Dick
