When my big boys were little, I remember Friday afternoons feeling like a dead zone. I wasn’t working that day and was always looking for things to do with them after their naps and half-day preschools. A few years ago, we started Open Studio on Friday afternoons for this very reason. Eventually we moved it to Saturdays in the winter, but this spring, Open Studio is back on Fridays in Montclair. Colorful fun for the kids, and relaxed vibes for your Friday afternoon. Come play and make with us, grab dinner at one of the many wonderful restaurants in Upper Montclair, then stop in for laboratorio del gelato and take a walk around Anderson Park before bedtime. The perfect Friday plan!

Corinne came into our life around 2018, first by offering some fabulously rich family workshops and then as a staple in our early childhood classes. When you come to one of Corinne’s classes, you will have no doubt that she is in love with the work, thriving and finding joy in the experience she facilitates for you. She is an out-of-the-box thinker, hilarious, colorful, so thoughtful, brave and kind. To know her is to love her, and we are so lucky that she loves Oh! Canary too. Corinne Amato

While the exact origin of April Fools day is unknown, some believe that is connected to the Roman festival of Hilaria (meaning “joyful”). It was a celebration marking the spring equinox that featured masquerades, games, and a collective spirit of playfulness.

At Oh! Canary we spend a lot of time thinking about how we can infuse that collective spirit of playfulness into our environments. We made a short video that explores our process of how we design the studio experience to spark curiosity, prompt play, and ignite discovery.

Jenn brought her daughter Julia to Oh! Canary classes in the very beginning, and I always loved having her in the studio. When I met her she felt like a dear old friend (and she is at this point!). She was the very first person to sub a class for me in a pinch, we spent hours alongside each other packing art kits during covid, and she’s been an important part of our team for nearly *8 years* now. She has warm and wonderful energy, is an early childhood pro, and her circle times are magic.

The second I laid eyes on Sarah’s work at , I knew I wanted to work with her! Sarah started teaching with us on weekends back in 2018, and she was the first person to help design and implement Camp Canary that year too. There is no one who understands materials, artistic development, and managing a room of little artists better than this fine human. We’re so proud to have her on our team as a curriculum consultant, lead on afterschool, and Camp Canary facilitator and manager.

Time flies when you’re having fun 🌈. O!C is NINE years old this week 🎉

We have lots of new friends on here lately.. Welcome! I’m Lacey and this whole thing was founded on a foundation of love and respect for art education.

Nothing happens overnight- what started out of the back of my Subaru in 2017 organically grew into a small space, and then a small team, and then a bigger space and a bigger team, and now two thriving studios in South Orange and Montclair, New Jersey.

In honor of our growth and the good folks who have made it happen, we are going to start sharing some fun team profiles this week… can’t wait to spotlight the wonderful humans who work with us because they truly set us apart.

AND in the spirit of going into our TENTH YEAR (holy moly, we are already planning our 10 year party! ), we are offering a 10% discount on spring classes. Sign up for our April- June session by Saturday and receive 10%* with code “happybirthday”

Thank you so much to every single person who has signed up for a class, liked a post, told your friends, sent a camper, taken a workshop, booked a party, or even just cheered us on from afar… any type of community support is so valuable for small biz.

Never in my wildest dreams, y’all ✌️💛🎂

*no retroactive discount requests please 🙏

Flowers three ways.

It’s a struggle keeping the peace when we are stuck in the house. Our boys are 11, 9, and 3 and given their ages finding activities that suit all three is difficult! But leave them alone, ignore their whining, and say no to screen- time for long enough and they find a way. They’ve been working on a lego amusement park along side each other- mostly happily- for a couple days. In the moments when they are flowing, it’s pretty special to see how each level and personality approaches a task… Until someone starts screaming :)

I set up some materials in front of an arrangement of tulips today and here’s how each approached it:

Mr. Eleven: Slow & deliberate sketching with a pencil. Carefully observing, light lines, erasing, more light lines, slowly building up to a layered composition. He chose a light application of oil pastel rubbing- and the result is like a sweet quiet memory.

Mr. Nine: Quickly started in on the composition, intuitive and bold lines, playful line quality and then a bright, colorful and abstracted application of acrylic paint.

Mr. Three: Started to draw the flower buds and lines representing the stems with a black oil pastel. Quickly escalated into a “zombie with seventy ninety-nine arms”, and then an action based paint layer. Mr. Nine yells at him “Lucaaaaaaa, stop mixing the paint!”.

—- It’s time to register for spring classes which begin on April 6! ——

I grew up in a small town in Kentucky. My mom was the high school s*x ed teacher and my dad was little league president and junior high principal. It seemed like they knew everyone- still does. Sometimes that was annoying- everyone knows your business in that southern way. But it also made me feel proud and safe in our community. If there was ever anything that came up that was beyond my parents’ ability, they knew someone, and that person was always willing to help. We had a strong community and everyone leaned on each other. This gave me a foundational sense of trust and confidence in human networks- such an optimistic gift.

When we moved to Maplewood from Brooklyn in 2014, we didn’t know anyone, but I knew there were so many interesting people here, and I wanted to connect with them. O!C became my community builder. All of a sudden I was surrounded by families. I was working with their kids, but also getting to know their individual stories, expertise, and talents. That’s how adult workshops were born!

Amanda de Beaufort aka collaborated on her first workshop at O!C in 2018 after we met at a friends’ house. Josi from .co did her first ever workshop with us after our coffee date. I met Jake Guttormsson at a local makers fair and his work was so playful it made perfect sense to invite him in to share.

Our workshops are designed to tap into the wealth of our local communities. They bring you to a space to meet and learn from the makers, but also from each other. They lean on us for an opportunity to share their work. We lean on them for their vision and expertise. You lean in to flex your creativity and get a fun night out!

The world is pretty hard to swallow right now, but our local community always makes me hopeful. Let’s lean on each other, y’all.

Thanks to our workshop coordinator for making it all happen!
