Airport drama: Oshiomhole breaks silence, accuses Air Peace of Boarding Scam

Seun Adeuyi · 11 Jun 2025

Former Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, has criticised Air Peace, over what he described as the deliberate exploitation of passengers at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 1, Zulu Hall, on Wednesday morning.
Daily Trust had reported how Oshiomhole, now a sitting Senator, reportedly arrived the airport by 6:20am for a flight that was to depart by 6:30am.
When he was told that his flight had departed, he reportedly blocked the entrance preventing other passengers from gaining entrance to the terminal.
Video footage of the drama sighted by our correspondent showed the Senator blocking the entrance.
In a statement titled, “Unruly Conduct by Prominent Politician at Lagos Airport: Air Peace Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for Violence,” the airline condemned the incident.
But in an interview with Vanguard, the former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President said the commotion at the domestic terminal was sparked by Air Peace’s decision to prevent passengers from boarding while allegedly reselling seats at inflated prices to others on the spot.
Oshiomhole alleged that the airline was deliberately turning away passengers who had booked earlier at lower prices, in order to sell the same seats for amounts between N200,000 and N300,000.
He cited the case of a woman who bought her ticket for N146,000, arrived at 5:55 a.m., but was told she had missed her flight and would need to purchase a new ticket for ₦109,100 to board the next one.
The senator said: “I booked Air Peace… They delayed the flight for over five hours. In the end, they announced a cancellation. I had to get another ticket. Yesterday, I booked a flight for 6:30 a.m., which is their first flight today. I booked and asked them to check me in online, which I did, along with two other Ghanaians who met me in Lagos. We checked in online just to avoid the last-minute issues I’ve had with them a couple of times.
“I got there at about five minutes past six. They told me the counter was closed. I told them, ‘No, I’ve already checked in.’ I showed them the evidence of my online check-in. Even before then, they had asked if I had checked in, and I told them yes, and that I had no luggage. They looked at it but still said the gate had been closed. Meanwhile, I noticed they were still taking other people in.
“So I asked, ‘How can you close boarding for a 6:30 flight at 6:05? What is the purpose of online check-in, then?’ If I had to go through another check-in process, then what’s the point of checking in online?
“While speaking to them, I saw many men and women who had been there even before me, with similar experiences. Basically, they were selling tickets on the spot at higher prices. I’ll give you an example. A lady bought her ticket for N146,000 online. She arrived at the airport at 5:55 a.m. for the 6:30 a.m. flight, after the gatemen had delayed her.
“They told her she was late and that the counter had closed for check-in. She said that was impossible, as it wasn’t even 6:00 a.m. They told her she would be put on the next flight. She protested, saying, ‘Why? Put me on this flight.’ But they told her the flight was full and she would have to wait.
“Meanwhile, the airline was selling tickets on the spot for between N200,000 and N300,000. To take advantage of the situation, they discouraged those who had bought tickets online at lower rates and sold to people willing to pay more.
“I asked the manager, ‘What is this woman’s crime? She has a baby that’s no more than six months old. How can you refuse to board her when the aircraft is still on the ground and more people are buying tickets?’ You cannot continue like this. Tomorrow, everyone will blame the government. You have regulatory agencies, and they are all compromising. You cannot board people buying tickets on the spot and deny those who booked days ago or checked in online.
“By the time the DSS and Air Force personnel came to find out what happened, they intervened and offered to put the woman on the next flight—the same offer they had made to me earlier. But to board that next flight, they told her she would have to pay N109,100. This was in addition to the original N146,000 ticket, meaning she would spend about N256,000 for a one-hour flight to Abuja. There were many others in the same situation, and everyone was shouting at the airport.
“I said to the manager, ‘You must follow the rules.’ Many people were stranded, except those who could afford another ticket. I followed the woman to the counter and told her to do whatever they asked. Those of us who were also prevented from flying gathered there. Even when an officer offered me access to a lounge, people around said, ‘Comrade, please don’t leave—this is how they’ve been treating us.’
“I had to send that woman N500,000. That’s basically what happened. I told them this cannot be allowed. I checked in online and arrived on time. The aircraft hadn’t taken off. I’m not supposed to check in twice. The rowdiness arose because many people were denied boarding while tickets were being sold on the spot to others.”

Natasha: My phone line cloned to malign Nigerian dignitaries

4 /6/2025

Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi West) has raised the alarm that her official telephone line has been cloned and is being fraudulently utilised to intimidate some Nigerian dignitaries.
In a petition to the Director of the National Cybercrime Centre, Nigeria Police Force, Abuja, through his lawyers, M. J. Numa and Partners, dated June 4, 2025, Akpoti-Udughan said the “unknown persons are impersonating her personality to make unsolicited calls and deliver messages pretending to have originated from her.”
She added that this deployment of advanced cyber tools collectively suggests the existence of “a coordinated attempt to compromise” her identity and possibly mislead and manipulate prominent individuals, using her name and reputation, and called for the commencement of full-scale investigation and forensic analysis of all activities linked to her phone with the view to unmasking and prosecuting the culprits.
The petition titled: “Disclaimer Regarding Illegal Cloning and Unathorised Use of Our client’s (Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagha) Phone Number,” signed Barr Michael Jonathan Numa, she said “the development is not only alarming, but also constitutes a gross violation of her privacy and a potential breach of her privacy and a potential breach of national security.”
Some of the notable politicians who have been contacted in the process, she said include former presidential adviser, Senator Ben Obi, former governor or Edo State and one time Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the CEO of Air Peace, Chief Allen Onyeama, Hon Emmanuel Ukon and journalist Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television.
While the Senator stated the receipt of a call from the Area Commander of Matama District in Abuja, calming to be returning her call, Barr. Numa added that a senior member of the Bar, Chief Ifedayo Adams Adedipe, SAN, once alleged he received a call, ostensibly from Senator Akpoti-Uduagha.
She disclaimed those messages and calls, wanting the said phone calls, messages or other communications which appeared to have emanated from her or “which purports to have been made by her but are not directly verified” to be treated with extreme caution and disregarded.
She expressed readiness to make her device and other communication devices available for expert examination where necessary.

ECOWAS releases $9m for IDPs, refugees in Nigeria, others – Commissioner

Joshua Odeyemi · 19 Apr 2024

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said it has released $9 million for humanitarian activities within the region in 2024. At a press conference in Abuja on Friday 19th April 2024, the Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, Professor Fatou Sow Sarr, said ECOWAS has released 9 million dollars for internally displaced people, refugees, asylum seekers, as well as for the communities that welcome them in all 15 countries.” “ECOWAS has allocated $1 million for stabilization in Nigeria (victims of terrorism, displaced people, injured people, rehabilitation and strengthening community resilience,” she added. Out of a fund of 25 million dollars intended for the fight against terrorism in Nigeria, Burkina, Mali and Niger, ECOWAS has reserved 4 million dollars for humanitarian actions, the Commissioner said. Why Niger Delta ex-militants haven’t received March stipends –FG Insecurity: Nigeria is a disgrace to the world –Gen. T.Y Danjuma She said ECOWAS emphasizes prevention, saying the regional bloc had a disaster reduction strategy and tools which allow it to monitor displaced populations and floods, anticipate problems and better manage crises. “Humanitarian actions constitute an important concern because of multiple crises and population displacements, to which we must add climate change and natural disasters. It should be noted that whatever the situation, even in the event of sanctions, ECOWAS humanitarian actions never stop. “Guinea, under sanctions received nearly 600,000 dollars in January 2024, namely: 100,000 dollars for the fire at the oil depot and 499,390 dollars for the floods,” she said. In the area of Science Education, the ECOWAS Commissioner said the programs of the Directorate of Education, Science and Culture focus largely on young people. She added, “Since 2019 ECOWAS has sent 42 young people for master’s degrees in diplomacy and international relations in Spain. “With PARI (Research and Innovation Support Program) from 2018 to 2024, it was possible to train more than 30 young people in Masters and PHD through funds donated to research consortia.” The Commissioner also disclosed that there were plans to host ECOWAS Youth Forum in the coming month. The forum, she said is “to take stock of the current situation, identify the changes and ruptures which have led to the general malaise observed in the sub-region. “Consultations will be organized in member countries by bringing together young people concerned in their geographic, social and socio-professional diversity.” “At the end of the process, the ECOWAS meetings will be organized in a member country, allowing the regional organization to review its policy, strategy and roadmap accordingly.”
