The boom cylinder on my excavator gets hit by falling debris every single day. I've replaced the cylinder three times this year. Finally I welded a guard made from 1/2 inch plate around the entire cylinder rod. It's like a steel cage. The debris hits the cage instead of the rod. I welded it with continuous beads on all four sides and added drain holes in the bottom so water doesn't collect. The cylinder hasn't been hit in 500 hours. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

I honestly feel so defeated. I saved for months to repair the damage along the side of my car because I was tired of seeing the scrape every time I walked toward it. The shop quoted me $2,950, and I trusted them because they promised the repair would look seamless. Then they sent this photo from the paint booth, and now I cannot stop overthinking it.

Most of the car is covered in plastic, green tape is wrapped carefully around the windows and rear wheel opening, and the exposed doors look much brighter under the booth lights than I expected. The technician said, “Do not judge the color until the clear coat is applied and everything is unmasked.” DO NOT JUDGE THE COLOR YET?? I know he probably understands the process, but I have spent too much money to pretend I am calm while my car sits inside a plastic cocoon.

Would you trust the shop and wait for the finished result, or worry that your savings paid for one side of the car to become a different shade of blue??

I paid $5,200 to fix one broken pipe under my garage and came home to what looks like a concrete casserole sitting in the middle of the floor. 😅

They cut out a huge rectangle, poured fresh concrete into the hole, scattered chunks of the original slab around, and basically called it a day.

I asked when they were coming back to make it look finished, and the foreman told me, “That’s a standard rough patch. It will cure into itself.”

…*cure into itself??* 🤨

The edges are jagged, the gravel is showing, and there are shovel marks across the top like someone tried to frost a cake during an earthquake.

My garage floor used to be ugly but at least consistent. Now it looks like there’s a permanent construction excavation site between my workbench and the driveway.

So I’ve got to ask—would you release the final payment for this, or did I just pay five grand for an indoor sidewalk sample? 😅

When do I actually stop bending?
I’ve asked a few journeymen, even asked my teacher, and somehow every answer is different — or they explain it in a way that makes even less sense.
Every time I do offsets, it feels like a full guessing game. Bend a little, check it, bend the other side, check it again, walk back and forth, question my life choices, repeat.
How am I supposed to properly use the degree markings on the bender? Am I watching the pipe, the mark, the handle, the star, my hopes and dreams?
Apprentice brain is buffering. Somebody explain offsets before I turn more EMT into modern art.
