Artpost Artpost opened in 2009 as a gallery and creative space located in downtown South Bend, IN.

Artists Kay Westhues and Jake Webster co-founded the gallery to provide an inclusive, welcoming exhibition space for regional contemporary and folk art, as well as a venue for local poetry. Currently, Artpost serves as Kay's art studio, and visits can be arranged by appointment.

An ekphrastic poem is a vivid written response to a work of art, inviting poets to imagine, interpret, and expand upon the meaning of a painting or sculpture through language. By reflecting on the “action” within an artwork, poets create new layers of understanding and connection.

Individuals of all ages are invited to participate by writing a poem inspired by a work of art on view in the galleries. All submissions are reviewed, and selected poems will be published in a commemorative chapbook. Chosen poets will also be invited to read their work aloud during our annual poetry reading event, held in the South Bend Museum of Art galleries.

In celebration of the 11th year of this beloved program, poets are encouraged to respond to 10 selected works of art. These works were chosen for their lasting impact over the past decade of the event and their significance to our community. Participating artworks will be clearly identified in the galleries with special didactics.

Submissions are open January 30 through March 13, 2026 and are to be emailed to [email protected].

*Limit 2 poems per submission
The public poetry reading will take place on April 30, 2026.

Ralph Lampkin was one of a kind, he had such a BIG heart. A generous supporter of South Bend's artists and Chicago's Cabaret scene. He is very missed. Please help if you can -
