The Cocopah Environmental Office hosted a Reptile Discovery Event with wildlife expert Sharon Maurer, who is dedicated to educating the public about Arizona’s reptiles and helping people better understand animals that are often misunderstood or perceived as dangerous.

During the event at the Community Center, Sharon discussed several species of Arizona snakes, how to identify them, and their important roles in the ecosystem. Participants were able to see a non-venomous California kingsnake and gopher snake up close and, at the end of the presentation, were given the opportunity to pet both snakes.

Attendees also had the chance to observe a blonde tarantula up close. Sharon demonstrated its docile nature by calmly holding it in her hand.

The event emphasized the importance of respecting and protecting wildlife. Most reptiles are not medically significant to humans, and even venomous species generally do not seek out or attack people. Every species plays an important role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem, and education can help promote a better understanding and appreciation of our local wildlife.

Update: Plan for continued lane restrictions on north- and southbound US 95 in Yuma through November
This alert updates the time and date of nighttime heavy machinery operations

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises motorists to plan for continued 24/7 lane restrictions along north- and southbound US 95 in Yuma through November as crews construct new roundabouts at the Imperial Dam and Aberdeen Road intersections.

Note: Heavy machinery and crews will be active nightly from 6 p.m to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, through Thursday, Sept. 17.
