Birth of a cribbage board. Part Two.

After a board blank is created it is sanded and one coat of Tung oil is applied and buffed to bring out the highlights of the grain and personality of the individual cribbage board to be!

The the customer decides what and where they would like to have laser engraved on their board. The board can be engraved on all of the surfaces but typically on the the top and front face of the board.

On the back of the board I engrave my logo with the phrase " Personally handcrafted for (customers name or who they are gifting it to) by A Deeper Image L.L.C."

The available space on the top of the board is roughly 9" X 18" and the front face 2" X 18". Remember every cribbage board is unique due to the capricious nature of the live edge.

In this case the customer decided they wanted the top and front face engraved. The new board owner is a personal friend of mine and quite a talented artist as well as a retired Navy Diver and Naval Officer! I have his permission to use his images and name concerning his board.

He wanted artwork on the board that he created in the mid 1980's but was lost in a shipment while returning home and the only existing example of the artwork was on the back of a t-shirt.

The picture of the image on the shirts was really very good. The only problem at the time was I was not very versed in converting / creating artwork. I have made quite a bit of progress since then but I still have a very long way to go!

SO.... I scanned the shirt and came up with a bluesish yellowish image. Then I began to remove the blue from the image and was left with different shades of yellow in the image you see here.

Then began the process of converting 50 shades of yellow to black and white and cleaning up the inconsistencies in the scan and in many parts of the image completely redrawing it!

To make a long story short I was very happily successful in creating an image that could be cleanly engraved!

What then took me days to to clean up and convert an image now takes me hours. Hopefully in the future I cut that time down even more. The higher the resolution of an image to be engraved directly affects the quality of the resulting engraving.

Once I had artwork that could be used in the engraving process I then imported the files into my engraving software then down loaded then to my laser to be engraved.

The artwork for the face of the board was a breeze by comparison all I had to do was type it into my vector graphics editor to create it and then export the file to my engraving software and the process to prepare for engraving repeated.

By The way this particular customer wanted a phrase used by Navy Divers. It is: "HOO YAH DEEP SEA!"

I do not own the artwork so for the purpose of attempting to protecting it I have place watermarks on the imported pictures and lowered the resolution.

Thanks for following me through this journey and in Part Three e will discusses the engraving process and see the fruits of our labor!

Birth of a cribbage board. Part One

First a customer chooses a board. In this case black walnut.

All of our boards are live edge on one side and are roughly 2" thick, 18" long, and 11" wide.

All of our boards are hand picked from the most beautiful portions of available stock. They are then handcrafted from kiln dried lumber either Black Walnut or Curly Maple and the result is a beautifully unique one of a kind cribbage board.

Live edge lumber varies and sometimes the result is a more square-ish appearance like the board pictured here and some times the live edge wanders.

Live edge means the outside edge of our boards are not changed by crafting or woodworking except for cleaning and polishing. The result is the unchanged edge of the cribbage board keeps the original characteristics of the tree and its shape.

This unaltered side of the cribbage board is referred to as as the live edge.
