Join the Pulaski County Public Library on July 7th from 5:30–6:45 PM for a presentation with Tressa Brown exploring Native history in Kentucky, including common myths and stereotypes, the deep history of Indigenous peoples in the region, and the realities of Native communities today.

Also on display will be this painting that depicts Buck Creek in 1776. Infornation sent to us states that at that time, numerous Native American tribes occupied/frequented this area. The area depicted is an actual location on Buck Creek in Northeast Pulaski Co; obviously the stream channels have changed constantly throughout the ensuing 250 years. The scene shows a small group of Wood Bison being stalked in late autumn or early winter by a small group of Native Americans, probably Shawnee. They are dressed in the garb that would have been common at that time. That garb consists of a mix of animal skins as well as cloth materials for which they have traded with European settlers and traders. The hunters carry a mix of bows and arrows as well as muzzle loading rifles which would not have been uncommon at that time. Wood bison were found here until the early 1800s and were a staple of indigenous people of the area.
The painting was done by Pulaski County artist, Jackie L. Larkins. Jackie is known for:
-The artwork for Kentucky Living from 1986 till 2010
-Harrodsburg Herald illustrator for the editorial page
-Piano sheet music covers for Willis Music Company and the Boston Music Company
Jackie won numerous awards from the Ky Press Association, including 11 first place art awards.

The way downtown Somerset is decorated in red, white, and blue is just beautiful as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday. Storefronts, businesses and homes all understood the assignment.
