“We are not evil. We are indicators of change unseen.”

This lanternfly puppet invites us to look beyond “good” and “bad” species and consider the larger ecological changes unfolding around us.

The spotted lanternfly first appeared in Maryland around 2018 after a 2014 infestation in Pennsylvania linked to contaminated imported stone shipments. Since then, they have spread quickly by hitching rides on trains, trucks, and cars and are now found in most Maryland counties.

As Marylanders, and as a horticultural destination, we certainly feel the threat they pose to trees and plants. Residents are encouraged to check vehicles, firewood, and outdoor equipment for egg masses, which look like grey-white mud, to help slow their spread.

Art like this reminds us that environmental challenges are complex, and sometimes the biggest questions start with curiosity.

What are your thoughts?

Inspiration Grows at Annmarie Garden!

A place where everyone can be connected to art and nature. A place to find joy, inspiration, self expression. A place to find peace and refresh the soul. This is what our founder and founding members envisioned for the beautiful Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center. Since then, the garden has grown to be a treasured gathering place - the heart of Southern Maryland - where the community comes together to celebrate, learn, play and be joyful. And with your help as members, donors and volunteers, it will continue to inspire for generations to come!

Take a walk along our wooded path and experience the majesty of sculptures on loan from the Smithsonian. Each year, we pay the expenses of their loan and management so the community can enjoy them, learn about significant art works, and know the peace of being connected to art and nature. Then come inside the beautiful art center to enjoy our rotating art exhibits which feature national, regional and local artists.

Kids love Annmarie Garden! With the whimsical “Fairy Lolly” playground tucked into the loblolly pine grove, the hands-on ArtLAB where kids make their own creations, and the educational and fun Nature Nook - home to our live native turtles, fish and snakes, our young visitors can play and be inspired for hours! Classes are also offered for all ages and fun camps for kids run throughout the summer.

Our events are legendary throughout the region: The “Fairy Festival” in spring, which kicks off the “Fairies in the Garden” public art exhibition each year; “Artsfest” in the fall, our annual weekend long celebration of art and music; and, of course, “Garden in Lights” during the holidays - a spectacular nightly holiday light show, handcrafted by our artists, unlike any other in the region!
